Show CAPTURED 1 STOLEN CAR AFTERCHASE Small Child of E. C. Gates of Santa Clara Narrowly Escaped Death as Desperate Despe-rate Pair Steal Gasoline 4. two-year-old child of Mr. inj Mrs. E. C. Gates of the Gates service station the o;ber side of Santa Clara, narrovly escaped es-caped death or serious injury jfonday afternoon when two roung men in an allegedly stolen automobile, passed its body upon leaving the station. The baby as antouched. The men, Stanley Sparks and Arthur Stevens, of Pomcnn. Cal., iiad driven up to the station at about 5 o'clock, for gas, asking or s-ven gallons. As Gates began be-gan to fill the tank he asked them to turn off the motor but they refused. As he filied the tank, put on the cap and started to clean the windshield, they made off at high speed, passing over the baby who had been playing in the yard. The sheriff's office was immediately im-mediately notified, and Deputy John H. Cottam apprehended the suspects at Littlefield an hour later. The car they were driving bore a California licence, and proved to have been stolen in Pomona. With it they had traveled trav-eled throughout northern Utah ' and were en route home. It is asserted that at Kanarra they had stolen gasoline to take them this far. The pair are be- . ing held in the Washington county coun-ty jail and will be turned over , to federal authorities for prose- , cution under Dyer act charges. |
