Show WAS ASSASSINATED. Fate That lieroll the Deposed Chinese Finpertir. Shanghai, Oct. 3. The announcement announce-ment of the death of the emperor is confirmed. The reports as to the means employed in his taking off differ. dif-fer. One story has it that he died of poison, and another that death was caused by strangulation, while a third that he was subjected to frightful torture, tor-ture, a red-hot iron being- thrust through his bowels. Mr. Mortimer, a member of the British Brit-ish legislation, on returning home yesterday yes-terday with a lady, was insulted and attacted by a mob, which stoned him and covered him with mud. Later in the day, some American missionaries were similarly attacked, as was tho Chinese secretary of the United States legation. The latter's ribs were broken. Sir Claude McDonald, British minister, minis-ter, at Pekin, reports that there is a dangerous feeling abroad. Steps have been taken to call the attention at-tention of the Chinese gpvernment to these outrages. |
