And a local athlete from Heber City is one step closer to a state softball title. Somer Flores is an 11-year old fast pitch phenom that lead her 12 and under, competitive fast _ pitch softball team- Salt Lake Chaos - to the 1999 American Ll Softball Association State Championship a week ago. | “I have always liked softball and I have always wanted to pitch,” Somer said. “I just love to play and want to be good at . it. And good she is. Flores led her team toa 42- 17-2 record over the season, with a personal record of 23-7-1 on the year. Team Chaos went into the ASA State title tourney and came away with a perfect 5-0 mark, and out-scored opponents 38-1 in five games. The title for the first 5 came in the form of a 5-1 win that Flores Se innings of play. Team Chaos brought home one other first place tourney win “g as well as two seconds and a third on the year. Flores started competitive play four years ago. As a —— in the Wasatch County Recreation Softball League, Flores faced a _ dilemma. Parents had complained about her speed, and the league changed the pitching rules to not allow fast pitch in the ie al 12 and under games. I can’t believe what I saw this last week. I took my kids to Deer ens elbdlald | Creek, at Rainbow Bay, to splash around a bit and get out of the heat. And before I could sit down on the beach, or send the kids into the water to play, I had to make a little beach patrol to collect the garbage and filth that lined the water’s edge. It was dis- gusting. _. For some time now I have debated the arerits of the major improvements that Deer _ Creek State Park is making to the shoreline i blll complete 180-degree turn from what it was. in the first place. I would hate to think that cheap people have disgusting habits while the deep pocket people have raised their habits to a high- - er standard. If I had not had to pick up empty pop and beer cans, chip bags and messy diapers, I might encourage people to place their junk in the right spot after uy are done with the beach. _ I have not ever thought this before, but maybe the folks that are willing to pay a of the reservoir. I have not always been in dawet as after last week, having to pick up soiled diapers from the beachfront, | am ready to pay any price to keep the entire place clean.
