NEW AND INFORMATION RATES THgagg CRHT.rjKgl I Home is the best place to develop a according to a University of Utah family specialist. A creative attitude thrives best in a family in which parents respect their children as individuals, encourage independence and foster a stimulating home environment, says Dr. Cheryl Wright, director of the Universitys Child and Family Development Center. Wright offers the following guidelines based on research findings for parents to help their children develop creative abilities at home. 1. Explain family decisions. Creative children come from families in which parents explain family decisions, rules and regulations. 2. Consult children. It is equally useful to give them some voice in establishing regulations. Such involvement encourages the development of intellectual curiosity and originality. 3. Set reasonable standards of behavior. Family discipline should be clear, consistent and predictable. Children need to be aware of their parehts values, but they should be allowed the freedom to work through their own beliefs. 4. Tolerate mistakes. When children are not pressured to be perfect, they will not worry about making mistakes and they will have the courage to experiment. 5. Give children the freedom to explore and experiment. Children should have the feeling that attempting new experiences is more important than success or failure. 6. Give children some freedom in making their own decisions. Given such freedom, they can learn to make reasonable, responsible decisions and to think independently. Let them pursue what they are interested in. 7. Do not be overprotective, but display warmth, acceptable support and respect for children. 8. Allow children to freely express opinions and ideas, including negative feelings. Openness in communication facilitates the development of creativity. 9. Give children a chance to play. Play is essential in a creative family environment since it often involves imagination, fantasy and other creative processes. 10. Do not emphasize roles that tend to inhibit creative potential. Children should know they are capable of engaging in many activities, regardless of their sex. 11. Be an effective model. Creative children tend to grow up in families where there are influential, creative adult models. 12. Expose children to a variety of areas and interests. The home should have reading materials, musical instruments, artistic and hobby supplies, etc., available to children. Trips and excursions to interesting places and regular visits to the library are important as well. Bud Price dies 's at age 59 childs creativity, William J.
