Head Coach Claye Robb said the girl has been able to keep her team in games throughout the season. "She pitched well again against us and kept us off balance bal-ance with her speed and variety of pitches," he said. "But we stayed in the game with only five hits. Our defensive play was significant sig-nificant to the win because most every time they got on base we got the runner at second base." Uintah was able to spark an offensive attack late in the game to come up with a 2-1 win. The game was tied at zero heading into the fifth. The Redmen were able to score when a double sent a runner at second home. Uintah took a breath and bounced back in the sixth to tie the game off a Madisen Robb solo home run. The seventh was scoreless for both teams and the two teams went into extra innings. Ties in softball are ended by each team getting an opportunity to score a runner from second base and any additional runs. Cedar City moved the runner to third base, but was unable to score, thanks in part, felt C. Robb, to freshman Taylor Craven at the mound. "She ptiched well and she's getting good experience as a freshman," he explained. "She struck out one of the three batters bat-ters that came up that inning. Krista Shewell was the chosen runner for Uintah, Madelyn Schulz bunted the ball to move Shewell to third. Janessa Curtis then hit a hard ball straight for the pitcher. Shewell was able to slide into home and Uintah won the game. "It was a good win for us on the road," explained C. Robb. "It is the third time this season we have gone into extra innings all with good teams and in every case we have won in the eighth inning. HELP STOMP OUT BURN VICTIMS i W ti.,,. - - . . J. As I have mentioned before, we are a young team and winning in extra innings at this point in the season against two ranked opponents op-ponents shows early confidence and poise for our team." Before facing the Redmen Uintah played in a St. George weekend tournament. The team went 3-2, winning its first three games to win their pool. The tournament started off with a game against Juab. Uintah had 17 hits in the 12-3 win. Schulz, AlyssaJohnson, Whitney Whit-ney Johnson and Craven all hit doubles. M. Robb hit a home-run and a triple. Uintah's. next game was against then second in 4A Snow Canyon (now third), a team Uintah lost to earlier 9-0. The game ended regulation in a 4-4 tie. In the eighth W. Johnson hit a double to score the runner and then scored one herself off a hit by Alexis Bowthorpe. Uintah took a two-run lead. Snow Canyon was able to score a redeeming point, but were stopped short of tie by a few key defensive plays made by Schulz, Craven and W. Johnson. Robb hit a home-run and a double. W. Johnson added a double of her own. C. Robb was . impressed, with theplay of Gabby. Cooley at catcher. "She gave 100 percent and kept everything in front of her," he said. The third game of the day was a rematch against Brighton, Uintah again won the game 8-3. 8-3. W. Johnson hit a deep home run that C. Robb said everyone knew was going "downtown." Cooley and M. Robb each had a double. Craven proved her phenomenal phenom-enal consistency, despite being just a freshman, by pitching all three games without a walk. "A freshman pitching consistently con-sistently the way she has shows the hard work in the off-season she has done," commented her coach. "Makenzie Timothy and Craven will tag team pitch, when they are both in shape they will be a good pitching duo." Uintah struggled offensively in their next game losing to Manti 7-3. They followed up the loss with a few more offensive struggles in a game against Bountiful. They lost 5-1. But, says C. Robb, "we battled to the end in that game and just made a few errors offensively on the bases." "The bottom-line is we are learning and growing from each contest," he added. "Wearework-ing "Wearework-ing to improve and increase our game knowledge." Uintah's next game will be away against Bear River.
