Show A8 Wednesday, March 26, 2008 Vernal Express 29th annual 9Health Fair slated for April 19 in Rangely Just one visit can change a life. That's what may be experienced when attending the 9Health Fair on April 19. Rangely District Hospital is proud to be partnered with 9Health Fair to bring free and low-cost health screenings, along with educational information informa-tion from many participating health-related organizations to the community. The Fair will be at CNCC, Weiss Center, 500 Kennedy Drive from 7 a.m. until '12 p.m. This year Kelly Just is 9Health Fair's 2008 Coordinator. Coordina-tor. She is excited that Rangely is one of the communities throughout Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska to participate in this wonderful program. " I am so grateful to all of the individuals who will volunteer to make this event happen." More than 20 free and low-cost low-cost health screenings are available avail-able to help people get a baseline check on their health including a $30, 31-component comprehensive compre-hensive metabolic screening, a $25 Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screening for men, and a $15 blood count screening. Free screenings such as oral, osteoporosis, finger stick glucose, glu-cose, breast, body in balance, and mental health are available, and educators from various health-related organizations are on hand to answer questions about health issues ranging from prescription drugs to diabetes to diet and exercise and more. In 2007, through a collaboration collabora-tion with the American Cancer Society, the Colorado Department Depart-ment of Public Health and Environment, the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and the University of Colorado Hospital, 9Health Fair is offering expanded colon cancer can-cer education at all 9Health Fair sites. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers and this expanded information re inforces the importance of early detection through screenings and encourages participants to take appropriate follow-up action. 9Health Fair is Colorado's largest and most trusted nonprofit non-profit health fair program. It promotes health awareness and encourages individuals to assume responsibility for their own health. Created by a National Institutes of Health project and 9NEWS, 9Health Fair's free and low cost health educational screening program has earned unique endorsements endorse-ments from the Colorado Medical Society, the Colorado Nurses Association and the Colorado Hospital Association. As-sociation. Since 1980, 9Health Fair has impacted millions of lives. As an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, organiza-tion, 9Health Fair relies on sponsorship funding and grants to support its operations. "Volunteers are the lifeblood of 9Health Fair," said Just, "and our community program would not be possible if we didn't have the generous support from the medical community, as well as non-medical volunteers. Community Com-munity volunteers are extremely important in helping 9Health Fair participants register, check 1 i 1 ! $-78 Let's Build Something Together each 2" x 4" x 92-58" Select KD Hem-Fir Stud Precision end trimmed 'Lightweight Straight Easy to cut and nail 4 sides surfaced 07033 SPECIAL now 6 each was $755 12" x 4' x 8" Gypsum Use to finish walls or ceilings 'Non-warping Crack resistant 'Easy to paint and accepts wallpaper 1 1730 c; :;' value! now $98 m was $129 32 or 36" 6-Panel Steel Entry Door Unit Weatherstripping for a tight seal 'Ready for lockset and deadbolt Primed and ready to paint 'Ready-to-install door with frame 'Limited lifetime warranty 'Fits rough opening: 34-12" or 38-12"W x 82-14"H Lockset not included 1 TOP CHOICE LUMBER PRODUCTS Square, straight solid and strong. "Helping people prevent health emergencies through screenings and education is what 9Health Fair is all about," continues Just. "Each year, thousands go to a 9Health Fair to get their health checked and to learn the latest tips on how to : continue their healthv lifestvle. " This year we would like people to take a pledge to attend and to bring a buddy. What better . gift to give a friend or family , member?" Biologists conduct chub study The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in conjunction with National Park Service biologists . collected 400 native fish of the Gila genus from the Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument . in northwestern Colorado. The fish, less than 4 inches in length, are considered young roundtail chubs (Gila robusta), . but given their small size some may be endangered humpback chubs (G. cypha). : The purpose of the research study documenting the fishes survival during collection and : transport from the river to : hatcheries. It will also likely de-terminewhetherthesefishcanbe de-terminewhetherthesefishcanbe : raised in hatcheries. The Upper : Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program will conduct a one year study as part of ef-: forts to recover the endangered -humpback chub. One of six known humpback . chub populations is found in : the Yampa and Green rivers in -Dinosaur National Monument. : Biologists recently reported that : this historically small population ; may have declined, possibly due' to prolonged dry weather and-river and-river flow conditions and associated as-sociated increases in nonnative l fish. The Recovery Program study r is one of first steps to determine future actions to manage thgis ; humpback chub population. The ;; State of Colorado's J. W. Mumma ; Native Aquatic Restoration Fa- "; cility in Alamosa and the FWS : Ouray National Fish Hatchery ; in Ouray, Utah each received 200 J of the collected fish. " "We give a lot of credit to our : program partners who pulled ; out all the stops to collect these 3 fish in a short period of time -when the river flows were just " right," said Recovery Program ; Propagation Coordinator Tom-Czapla. Tom-Czapla. "We had staff from the:: Colorado Division of Wildlife, : National Park Service, and the " US Fish and Wildlife Service. working side-by-side to make this happen. We also appreciate the cooperation of the Jim Carollo, the owner of Mantle Ranch and his caretaker Jim Seewald, who granted us access. Tom also helped to collect the fish. ; The ease of capture of this large quantity of fish indicates that they are prevalent in this particular section of the Yampa, River within the monument. It : will be about a year, however, before biologists are able to dis-: tinguish between the two Gila ; species to confirm which they represent. At that time, the roundtail chubs will be returned .: to their original capture loca-f tions. The Recovery Program ' will evaluate the success of this ' study and determine whether to continue to hold humpback.: chubs in hatcheries or return" them to their original capture locations. As standard practice, the; state of Colorado and the FWS take every precaution to ensure ., no fish diseases or parasites are ; transferred between the rivers : and the hatcheries.
