The first game was against the 3A state champion team from Pine View. Uintah lost the game 6-0. Their second game was against Canyon View, with a 5-3 win for the Utes. "We looked like a gym team, " said Head Coach Jared McKeach-nie. McKeach-nie. The team has spent the first few weeks playing inside a gym as they waited for the snow to clear. "We didn't know how to handle Pine View, they were fast and physical. I think our team can say they gave their best. Pine View's championship team didn't skip a beat." After playing such a tough physical game the Utes only had a night to recuperate, but they were able to gather their selves for a win. "We're excited about the season," sea-son," said the coach. "The Canyon Can-yon View game gave us a glimpse of why. This team has no stars, none of them think they're the best player on the field. They're just a group of hard working individuals with a lot of heart. I think the season is going to be a lot of fun. We have nine seniors who'll provide some leadership for us." The combined performance from a number of the team is something McKeachnie feels will be the style of play for the 2008 Utes. "The Pine View game was a hard game to start with," he explained. "They're definitely tough. They beat 5A Bingham, a perennial contender 1-0. 1 think we're all right." . "The kids worked hard during the off-season, " added McKeachnie. McKeach-nie. "They worked in gyms and in church houses. They have great touch on the ball in doors. We just need some time to develop the same sort of touch outdoors." Uintah will began region play on March 10 with a home game against Park City. The Miners are always in the fight for the top spot and it will be a good chance for Uintah to gauge themselves against the rest of the region. Team swings for top three finish By Casey Christensen Express Writer Uintah's baseball team has set its sights on a top three region finish and a top five for state. Head baseball coach Brent La-brum La-brum said both are reasonable for his team that only lost three seniors from its line-up. "We scored 25 runs in the two games we played at during - the state tournament last year, " he explained. "But we lost both games." He felt the reason behind the loss has to do with Uintah 's pitching pitch-ing game, something they've worked throughout the season to improve. Also the factor giving Judge the edge in region play. "They have two returning all-state pitchers," said Labrum. "They're top of the region by far." Labrum said he felt Judge and Wasatch would be tough teams to beat. The team will rely on its State parks prepare for July 4 It may be March, but it's almost al-most the Fourth of July to many anxious campers and Utah State Parks and Recreation reservation reserva-tion agents. "We'll rely on Landon Lucero, Gary Hacking, Dallas Smuin and Josh Curtis," said Labrum. Lucero will play third base, Hacking will sit behind the plate at catcher, Smuin will handle the shortstop spot and Curtis will take care of first base. All four will also take care of some duty at pitching. The snow has added another obstacle to the team's growth, as Uintah has endured on of its worst winters in years and the baseball team has not been able to take the field. "We've had to practice in the parking lot on good days and in the gym on bad days," said Labrum. This weekend the team will travel to Farmington, N.M. to compete in an annual tournament. tourna-ment. "We expect some good competition compe-tition and we're excited to get on the field," said Labrum. The tournament will give the team an opportunity to see if their off-season work has done enough for the pitching staff that they will be able to utilize their strengths to compete against Wasatch and Judge. Uintah's first home game will be against Emery on March 25. The varsity game will being at 3 p.m. Their first game after returning re-turning from Farmington, N.M., will be against Grand Junction, Colo. Both of the team's first two games were canceled because of the snow. h i : i i Josh Curtis, fresh off the basketball court, leaps for high throw to first base.
