Q: How often didyou practice this sport? A: During the season I was in the gym from 2:45 p.m. until 6 p.m. During the offseason I went to summer camps and I jogged while dribbling a basketball. Q: Who do you look up to? A: I look up to Coach J Johnson John-son because of everything he went through. My parents because be-cause everything they've been through in raising six kids and they're still doing great. Mindy Martin teammate ; she is a great athlete that pushes herself and pushes me. We would fight to finish in first place during the sprints. Q: What is your favorite sport? A: Basketball Q: Other hobbies? A: Soccer and hanging with family, friends and nieces and nephews. Anything sports related. re-lated. Q: What do you want to do in the future? A: I'm attending college at BYU Idaho. I want to go into Elementary Education; I'd like to become a third grade teacher. When the time comes I want to serve an LDS mission. Then I want to be married and have a family. Q: Any other position you want to play? A: I wish I was a post. Q: Outside of your sport who at Uintah High School has been the most fun to watch compete? com-pete? A: Derek Bunderson, he is a great athlete that works hard. Does the things necessary to help his team win. He doesn't play for himself. Q: In one word describe this year's season? A: Emotional, it wasn't so much the things on but off the court that made the season hard. Q: Most memorable moment while competing from this season? We were in a huddle with eight seconds left on the clock. Coach J kept yelling yell-ing don't let them have a three. We broke out of the huddle and they ended up getting a layup. So Makenzy Simper threw in to me and I saw Lesha Labrum break into the lane. I chucked the ball as hard as I could to her. She caught it with 3.5 seconds left. We won the came 41-39, it was an awesome experience. Q: Other memorable moment from the season, but not while competing? A: When we all had a senior meeting and Coach Johnson talked about things outside of basketball. About how there was more to life then sports. He said 'You never know when your last days might be. You don't know if tomorrowyou'll find out you have cancer. You have to live everyday to the fullest.' Gagon selected girls' swim Athlete of the Year Kristin Gagon, a sophomore, has been voted at this year's girls' swim Athlete of the Year. She was an important part of the team and helped the relay team qualify for state. Her improvements improve-ments throughout the year were . impressive. Kristen Gagon showed tons of improvement over the season and worked hard to get there," said Head Swim Coach Wendy Harris. "She started the season out in the 100 free with a time of l:09.27and ended witha 1:03.74 at state. She also dropped a few seconds off her 50 free and ended the season with a 28.56. Way to go- Gagon stepped out of the water for a quick interview with the Vernal Express. Q: What makesyou the athlete you are? A: I really want to do well. I try my hardest and I do my best cause I want to swim in college. Q: How often did you practice this sport? A: During the season I swam . twice a day. In the off-season it was about three times a week. Q: Who do you look up to? A: I look up to all the other swimmers. V.. ill Vernal Bowden chosen as hockey Athlete Kyler Bowden, a junior at Uintah High School, was chosen as hockey Athlete of the Year. He played goalie for the Utes and was an important part of keeping keep-ing them in the game. He spent time on the JV team and played center, displaying his vast array of skills. "There are not words that can describe how our success is because of this young man," said Head Coach Mike Kitzmiller. "He is without a doubt one of the best high school goalies in the state of Utah. Bowden won the Utah High School Hockey Associations best goalie among the junior class, which is a high honor. This young man can play any position on the ice better than most and would be starting at any position he wanted to play. As a goalie, he doesn't get much help or direc- Kristin Gagon was selected as the swim Athlete of the Year for the girls' team. He stands in the goal, by himself, never a part of the excitement of the bench or the scoring drives, but he provides pro-vides plenty of excitement in the net. He is the lone solitary figure that is really the backbone of Bunderson voted boys' basketball athlete Derek Bunderson was selected select-ed as this year's boys' basketball Athlete of the Year recipient. He won the award for football in fall 2007 and now receives the distinction of first two-time winner. win-ner. He was awarded a place on the Academic All-State team for his excellence in the classroom and receives this award for his success on the court. "I thought all of the candidates can-didates were deserving," said Head Coach Scott Mansfield. A: I want to swim in college and than be a nurse. Q:Whatracesdidyou compete in? A: Freestyle and back. I was on the 400-relay team that went to state and the 200 medley relay. A: Drill team and football. Q: In one word describe this year's season? A: Fun, it was hard but fun. I got close to everyone and that made the whole season worth it. It felt good when it was over; like we accomplished something. Q: Most memorable moment while competing from this season? sea-son? A: At state in the backstroke there was a line in the middle of the pool and my goggles were fogged up, I thought the line was a flag indicating I needed to turn around. I started slowing down but realized it wasn't a flag before I turned all the way around. Q: Other memorable moment from the season, but not while competing? A: Probably the bus rides. Since most of our games were low scoring affairs, it is pretty safe to say that the W's we placed in the win column were there because of Kyler 's outstanding efforts in goal. Bowden is a great asset to this team and is a large part of the reason why wehadawinning season this year. He devotes a lot of his time to hockey and helps coach the pee wee team. He is an all around great athlete and great person. He is the Uintah Ute hockey club's President as well." The Vernal Express caught him in the net long enough to ask him a few questions. Q: What makesyou the athlete you are? A: I'm focused in games and my hard work. Q: How often did you practice this sport? A: Four days a week for two to three hours. Q: Who do you look up to? A: Patrick Wa, one of the greatest goalies of all time. Q: What is your favorite sport? A: Hockey because all of the personal skills it takes and the fast pace. . Q: Other hobbies? Q: Which Uintah athlete has Fugal awarded boys' swim athlete Gregory Fugal, a sophomore, won athlete of the year for Boy's Swim for his finish at the state competition. She left for a moment and we told the waiter it was her birthday. When she came back they brought her a cake and sang happy birthday to her.
