Show Wednesday, May 14, 2003 Vernal Express B8 Ben chases down a suspect" during a display of his talents as part of the Law Day celebration organ' Ized by Judge Jody Petry of the Uintah County Justice Court. found guiltty and innocents BBg GSadl Wolff Virginia Harrington Express writer Law Day was a big success again this year with lots of events held for the celebration of the American Justice System May 1. Students throughout the school district were invited to enter their art woik related to Law Day and 12 winners were selected from the many entries. The winning pieces of an are now framed and adorn the walls of the Uintah County Justice Court Room, replacing the works from last year's Law Day. The court room was also the setting for three mock trials in which the Big Bad Wolf was tried for his crimes against the Three Little Tigs. Each trial had a jury composed of 14 school children who heard the testimony, weighed the evidence and came up with a verdict. In two of the trials, the wolf was found guilty of all charges but one jury found him innocent. Now, we've all read the story and it boggles the mind that anyone could find such a character innocent. However, when the jurors in one of the trials looked closely at the evidence, they found room for reasonable doubt. After all, allergy season is upon us and it just might be true, as he claimed, that the Big Bad Wolf has hayfever. He wasnt really trying to blow that little straw house down, he just had giant wolf sneezes. And he didnt really mean to kick down the walls of the other house. He was running so fast that he couldnt stop and his foot accidently ran into the wall of sticks. That just goes to prove that when a jury trial starts, no one knows how it will end. Not the judge, played by Vicki Hunt of the Discovery Fifth Grade Center media center; not the prosecutor, played by attorney Wes Baden and not the defending counsel, played by attorney Lance Dean. The Three Little Pigs, played by Judge Jody Petry, radio personality and Conn Pat County Commissioner Jim Abegglan, were delighted with the two guilty ver dicts and quite surprised by the one verdict of innocence. The Big Bad Wolf, played by Uintah County Jail Commander Lt. Ron Gipson, strutted proudly as only a wolf can do when his behavior received vindication with that innocent verdict. Not all the activity was inside the courtroom. The participants gathered outside on the front lawn of the State and County Building to enjoy a bit of sunshine and a talented display by Ben, the famous deputy dog from the Uintah County Sheriffs Department. Ben, handled by Officer Bevan Watkins, successfully detained the suspect, played by well padded Officer Kevin Orr. Ben chased Orr down, grabbed his padded arm and put him flat on the ground, holding him there until restraining handcuffs could be applied. As always, Bens performance drew shouts of approval from the crowd. Law Day continued in the afternoon with discussion concerning the legal system, held in the court room.
