"The day was really fun. The kids seemed to be nicely anxious, but their stress level seemed to be over," said Kay Baker, Uintah High School's Sterling Scholar adviser. "It was fun to watch them walk into their interviews with confidence and even walk out with confidence. They all felt that their interviews went really well." Baker said she knew her kids were "awesome" and knew they deserved the recognition. , She said she enjoyed hearing the whispers in the crowd as, one after another, one more Ute senior's name was called as a Sterling Scholar runner up. "It was rewarding for me to see those kids be recognized for being the kind of people they are," Baker said. Chaffin wanted to recognize and encourage encour-age students who excel both scholastically, and as leaders in their communities. Baker, who has been advising Sterling Scholars at Uintah High for 22 years, said simply reaching reach-ing the regional competition is considered a great honor. Many students have worked for years to attain the goal of being named their school's Sterling Scholar candidate, she said, and then spend hours working on their portfolios for competition. At the regional level, each student's 20-page portfolio is reviewed by three judges in their respective category. Students are then interviewed for 15 minutes about their work in the classroom and their community. Some of the categories, like music and dance, include a performance component. Winners in each category are awarded $500, with the runners-up runners-up collecting a $300 award. Those named as Sterling Scholars at the regional level are eligible for scholarships at all of Utah's public pub-lic universities. The scholarship amounts varying from school to school. Some schools also offer scholarships to any student who qualifies for the regional competition. competi-tion. Two Union High seniors and 10 seniors from Uintah High School were also recognized as Sterling Scholar runners-up from apool of nearly 140 students from 14 schools in Duchesne, Uintah, Rich, Morgan, Tooele, Wasatch, and Summit counties. Only two students in each category cat-egory are selected for runner-up honors. Union's Edwin Butterfield, son of Fred and Analisa Butter-field, Butter-field, was selected as the runner-up runner-up in the music category. He was joined by Aubrey Winterton, the daughter of Blaine and Kristina Winterton, who was named runner-up in the dance category. "I always think my kids are so wonderful because of all the things they've done," said Joyce Orton, who advises Union High School's Sterling Scholar candidates candi-dates and served as the chairwoman chair-woman for this year's Northeast Region Sterling Scholar competition. competi-tion.
