Show Vernal Express Wednesday. February 6, 2008 B3 Todd community celebrates Reading Super Bowl XVII Close to 350 students and family members from W. Russel Todd School attended the Reading Read-ing Super Bowl Family Night for a "make-it and take-it" evening of fun, all focused on improving literacy skills. Materials and games covered several reading skills for students stu-dents in kindergarten through fifth g-ade. The school's faculty fac-ulty supports the CELLExLL research that documents that the development of literacy is progressive. The progression of reading and writing involves surrounding surround-ing students with conversation and print; modeling the process of reading and writing, in addition addi-tion to providing direct instruction instruc-tion in specific areas of need; and encouraging students, to engage in similar activities independently. indepen-dently. The link to real life is essential for maximum growth, the research re-search shows. Using this philosophy philoso-phy as its base, the school's activity activ-ity night emphasized reading and writing components: main idea and questioning strategies using the "WH" paper sack owl for reading comprehension; making words and word-sort games for phonics practice; and BINGO, using the parts of speech. The Smart Mouth (vocabulary (vocabu-lary spelling game) was a favorite among the older students. After completing each activity, activ-ity, students earned a ticket redeemable at the Literacy Booth for books, pencils, notebooks, note-books, brightly colored pencil sharpeners and erasers. The students were excited to earn the opportunity to purchase items to help them practice their literacy skills. In addition, parents helped their children earn extra points for their school teams in the Reading Super Bowl contest. Todd Connections and West z-zl t i' --li-'. ' I . ..II II ' " . V ii !Vi' ., ,.,., - .. Snow removal Dr. Dan Goodkind of Ashley Family Clinic spent time on the roof of his business removing snow on Monday. Ice buildup along the eaves is causing a numberof home and business owners to remove the ice and snow. For many businesses and homes, snow and ice are causing leaks, while many are concerned that the weight of last week's snow could cause a collapse. Students and family members showed up to help improve literacy skills. Students kick off "Operation DVD" "W 4 s .. V. : I i ' Students at Ashley Elementary Elemen-tary love to give. In December, students gave new and used DVDs for "Operation DVD," an organization that distributes DVDs to U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. In just three weeks in December, Decem-ber, Ashley students brought in 181 DVDs. Mrs. Murray's second grade class and Mrs. Karren's fifth grade class brought in the most DVDs. Students learned that movies are a great source of recreation for our troops, and one of the most requested items. Soldiers can't go outside to play football or things like that because of landmines and snipers, so they enjoy watching the movies. Now Ashley Elementary students would like to let the community give with them. The school has a collection box across from the office. Anyone wishing to donate new or used DVDs can drop them there. Children'smov-ies Children'smov-ies are also accepted. The movies go to a distribution center where children's movies are taken out and distributed to the soldiers' families. The school will be collecting col-lecting DVDs for the rest of the school year. Parents helped their children earn extra points for their school teams in the Reading Super Bowl contest. After-School Clubs provided a warm chili dinner from Wendy's that was enjoyed throughout the evening. The After-School program expressed its appreciation apprecia-tion to Wendy's for its support of family night. As a sign of the evening's success suc-cess - written in the condensation condensa-tion on a window in the cafeteria that night - were the words, "I love school," and the staff loves the community members of all ages.
