Show t A4 Wednesday, February 6, 2008 Obituaries "f 1 ir, LJ Clayton Merkley - Clayton EvertMerkley, age 57, of Salt Lake City passed away at iis home on Jan 29, 2008, from complications of surgery. He was born on Sept. 27, 1950, in the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake Cit to Evert and Delores Merkley. He spent his childhood in Vernal and graduated from Uintah Uin-tah High School in May 1968. He has done a lot of traveling and loved camping trips in the mountains. When the Gallivan Center opened in Salt Lake City, he got a job doing landscaping and maintenance. He had a great work ethic and was a Jack - of - all trades and a master of many. He learned to love landscaping--wor king with trees, shrubs, and flowers. The grounds around the Gallivan Center were always a showplace and have been shown on many national, state and city brochures and calendars. They were often a backdrop for the KUTV-Chanel 2 News outdoor broadcasts. Clayton loved all his friends at the Gallivan Center and they were so good to him. Clayton was a happy guy. He loved everybody, especially his family, and his life revolved around his many nieces and nephews. They were a delight to him. He loved being with his family and would drive out from Salt Lake just to eat dinner with them. He made everyone around him feel comfortable. He was always happy and smiling. His funeral was held at the Glines 3rd Stake Center on Feb. 4 and was buried in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery. Willie worked many years for the Uintah National Park Service in Vernal and retired from the Wasatch National Forest Service as personnel director in Provo in 1980. She was Worthy Grand Matron of Utah for the Order of Eastern Star in 1976. Mother of Samuel Burton (Gloria) Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; Mariana (Fred) Jensen of Arvada, Colo.; Claude LeRoy Smith of Concho, Ariz. Sister to Joan Elsberry, Loomis, Calif.; A and Bud Spaugy, Reno, Nev. She had 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, hus-bands, LeRoy W Smith and John G(Bud)Conway; sisters, Hallie Backus and Gladlyn Petersen Harrison. Family rememberances will be held with a reunion at a later date. The family suggests donations dona-tions be given to the Shriner's Hospital. Father on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008 at the Maeser Bee Hive Homes due to natural causes. She was born on July 9, 1912. in Maeser to William Asihby anEratija Estella Woodruff .Murray; and was raised by her grandmother, Mary Ashby Murray. She married Archie Dee Jenkins on Septv28,' 1931 in Vernal and their marriage mar-riage was later solemnized on Dec. 7, 1931 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They raised four children and she carsddeyQtedly for her husband until he passed away in November 2000-- v V Clara spent her most of her life at her grandfather's (Jeremiah (Jer-emiah Hatch Murray) Maeser homestead. She was born-at the homestead, grew up with her 1 1 siblings, raised her, family and grandchildren, caring for her ; small sheep herd, and other farm animals, and worked .alongside her husband on tftejr cattle . ranch. Clara loved to' garden; crochet, quilt, and take special care of her flowerbeds. She enjoyed en-joyed having exchange studenti and extended family and frienda ;' live and work with them during dur-ing the summer months a the" ranch. She also enjoyed reading and listening to the scriptures, , historical books and documents, and uplifting musiq. , " Clara was an active medjber " of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various capacities, including includ-ing Relief Society and Primary presidencies. Cook of Vernal passed away at home on Feb. 2, 2008. Greg was born Feb. 2, 1953 in Vernal to Glade Cook and Laverta Sloan Cook. Greg married Karen, Nov. 21, 1982 in Las Vegas, Nev.. Greg loved to hunt; for years he guided hunts in Utah, Colorado Colo-rado and Wyoming. Greg loved the outdoors and being around Glenavere Ross and Reyma Horrocks in Vernal. Sheldon was a jack-of-all-trades and was continually learning learn-ing something new. Sheldon's occupational trades included electrician, lineman, carpenter and many others. He was always willing to share these skills to help neighbors and family. Sheldon appreciated fine art and his own artistic abilities were exceptionally fine. He made knives and furniture. He painted and was an amazing photographer. photogra-pher. Sheldon loved spending time in the outdoors. He especially enjoyed en-joyed hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. His hobbies included gardening, raising flowers and teaching his grandchildren to appreciate nature. He truly was a cowboy at heart. In 1994 Greg and Karen started their business, contracting with the Bureau of Land Management to gather wild horses. This was Greg's calling in life. He loved to rope and ride horses. This involved traveling all over the western United States. This was a very rewarding and challenging job that Greg looked forward to everyday. The people that Greg met and worked with became some of his best friends. Greg is survived by his wife Karen; parents, Glade and Laverta La-verta Cook; brother, G. Russell (Cathie) Cook of Houston, Texas; daughter, Shari (Brian) McNa-mara; McNa-mara; grandchildren, Brady and Whitney McNamara; and three children from a previous marriage. mar-riage. Services under the direction of Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary. Glenavere Hunting Ross of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, passed away at the age of 86. She was born June 28, 1921 in Vernal Ver-nal to Reuben Hyrum Hunting and Ethel Minerva Eaton. She is lovingly remembered by her four children, Glenagene (Jay) Marsden of Sherwood Park, Alberta; Dale (Ann Marie) Ross of Rawlins, Wyo. ; James T. Ross of Provo; and Tony Lynn Ross of Salt Lake City. To cherish her memories are also 15 grandchildren, grandchil-dren, 38 great-grandchildren, four great great-grandchildren, as well as numerous relatives and friends. Glenavere was predeceased by her loving husband Eugene Dale in 1986. Funeral services were Saturday, Satur-day, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. in the Vernal Mortuary. Burial took place at the Vernal Memorial Park under the direction of Thompson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary. Cluff, Kimberly (Shaun) Gee, Shandi (Gregory) Perry, Chancey (Lacey) Horrocks and Raynie Horrocks; stepchildren, Brenda (Duane) Cook, Sheryl (Rick) Dor-ity, Dor-ity, Steve Neal; 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by mother, Reyma Horrocks; and siblings, Gordon, Gloria Jean, Britt, Gregory, Gawin, Venissa, Leslie Ann and Joseph Finley. He is preceded in death by his father and grandchildren Ashley Horrocks and Dalian Cook. Funeral services will be at the Lapoint LDS Church on Friday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. Viewing will be at the Thompson-Blackburn Mortuary Thursday, Feb. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to service at the church.
