Center handled 53,000 poison emergencies in the year 2004. Most of those cases involved children under the age of six. The majority were handled over the phone, and he children didn't have to see a doctor, but many serious poisonings still occur every year. The most common poisons children get into in the home include toothpaste, nail care products, cleaners, pain relievers, reliev-ers, and cold medicines. The following are tips to prevent poisoning in the home: Close all containers tightly after use. Put all medicines away immediately after use. Don't leave lawn chemicals, where kids can find them. Never let young children out of your sight when taking medicines or vitamins. Keep medicines in their original containers. Don't take your own medicine medi-cine in front of children. Never refer to medicine as "candy." Be cautious in homes with elderly residents. The elderly tend to take more medications and may not use child-resistant caps. The Poison Control Center is available for help 24 hours a day at 1-800-222-1222. Call immediately imme-diately if you suspect a poisoning. Health insurance for pets is one of the fastest growing categories in the insurance business. In fact, some companies are offering pet health coverage as a benefit to their employees. Medical treatments for pets are becoming more sophisticated, which is good news for pet owners, but with those advances come higher costs for pet health care. Many of these newer treatments are also extending the life expectancy of pets, which can lead to increased veterinary costs for old-age related i .... ailments. Many people are realizing that health coverage for their furry family members is a viable option. For many pet owners, paying a monthly or yearly premium is preferable to trying to save up for accidents and unexpected illnesses. There are several companies that provide health care coverage for pets. Many allow pet owners to continue seeing their own veterinarian instead of choosing one from a provider network. This is especially convenient for people in rural areas, who may not have the time to travel to the nearest "approved provider." Some plans will cover a wide range of veterinary expenses, including vaccinations and regular check-ups. Other plans will only provide coverage for illness or accidents. A pet's regular veterinarian can help the owner determine which plan will be the best choice for their pet. Kenny Lavar Potter and Sondra Lynn Snow both of Vernal, issued on Jan. 6, 2006.
