Ifil 1 V.aa4''.v IP The Uintah Ute varsity team owned own-ed a three point first quarter lead in their region basketball game, Friday against the Bulldogs in Provo, but the Vernal crew ended up losing the game, 37-29. The varsity game was close for the Uintah Utes, but the Ute sophomore team did even better as they downed the Bulldogs, 55-50, for the first win over a Provo team in a long time. Five Uintah Utes scored in the 9-6 Ute first quarter. Jason Taylor, Kenny Ken-ny Rasmussen, Mark Powell and Todd Mulville scored two points and Kyle White added one point. Hatch led Provo in the first quarter of the varsity game with four points and Santiago put in two counters. Provo outscored the Uintah Utes, 12 to 6, in the second quarter to take an 18-15 lead. Taylor, Powell and White scored two points each for the Utes in the second quarter. Frampton Framp-ton was the top gun for the Bulldogs in the second quarter as he poured in eight points on three field goals and two free throws. Santiago added four points. The Utes scored only six points in the third quarter and the top point gainers were Blake Hor-rocks Hor-rocks and Mulville at two counters. The number one ranked Provo Bulldogs were led by Frampton, Santiago, San-tiago, Hatch and Monson at two points each. Uintah scored eight points in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs put in 11 counters for a 37-29 win. Rasmussen led the Utes in the fourth quarter with four points and Hor-rocks Hor-rocks and Powell added two points. Provo was led by Jarman at three points. Hatch, Lott, Santiago and Morgan scored two points. Rasmussen led the Uintah Utes with eight points and Powell scored seven points. Rasmussen hit 4 out of 4 free throws and fired in two field goals. Powell popped in two field goals and hit 3 out of 4 free throws. Taylor and Mulville scored four points. Horrocks and White added three counters. Uintah put in nine out of 14 free throws. Frampton and Santiago led Provo with ten points. Frampton was 2 for 2 from the foul line and put in four field goals. Santiago fired in five field goals. The Uintah sophomore team jumped out to a 17 to 16 lead in the first quarter and led by four points, 31-27, at halftime. Kenny Mohar blazed the nets for the Utes in the first quarter with 12 points on five field goals and two free throws. Eric Morrow added three points and Colt Mortenson scored one counter. Mohar continued his hot shooting as he fired in eight points in the second quarter on three field goals and two free throws. Mortenson added four points and Brett Weldon scored three counters. Rogers led Provo in the first quarter with six points on three field goals. Clark added four points. Two points were scored by Esplin, Collins and Ballif. McKinnon added one point. Rogers and Esplin were the top Provo scorers in the second quarter at four points each and Collins added two points. The Utes scored 14 points in the third quarter and held Provo to eight points for a ten point lead of 45-35. Lee Schulz led Uintah in the third quarter with six points on three field goals. Weldon added four points. Mohar and Mortenson scored two points. Esplin led Provo in the third quarter with eight points on four field goals. Provo scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, but the Utes poured in ten counters to beat the Bulldogs by five points, 55-50. Schulz led Uintah in the fourth quarter with four points. Mohar was the top Uintah scorer at 20 points. Mohar pumped in nine field goals and hit 6 out of 8 free throws. Schulz added ten points. He fired in three field goals and hit 4 out of 5 free throws. Weldon and Mortenson scored nine points. Morrow put in three counters. Uintah was 19 for 32 at the foul line. Esplin led Provo with 14 points on seven field goals. Rogers and Collins scored 12 counters. Clark and Ballif added four points. Snow scored three and McKinnon put in one point. Uintah's junior varsity team was downed by Provo, 45-19. Provo grabbed grab-bed an 8-2 lead in the first quarter and owned a 19-7 lead at the end of the second quarter. The Bulldogs had a lead of 35-13 after three quarters. Joe LeBeau, Mulville and Cory La-ing La-ing led Uintah with four points. Valton Mortenson, David Murphy and Jeff Palmer added two points. White scored one counter. Johnson led Provo with 15 points and Lott put in eight counters. The Uintah Utes will host American Fork, Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Uintah will host Orem, February 8 and Timpview, February 15. The Utes will battle Union in Vernal, Ver-nal, February 20.
