If they survive all those viewings and cocktails (and they always do) , the Academy Awards nominations will be made next month. Awards are presented on April 9. The crystal ball is a little murky, but what the heck: BEST PICTURE. "Terms of Endearment" or "Tender Mercies" will be chosen Best Picture; with the former likely to outdistance the latter. "Terms" will surely receive other nominations as well, for James L. Brooks' writing, his direction, and the performances of several of his players (see next section). The remaining films to be smiled upon by the tender mercies of the academy, are somewhere on this list: "The Big Chill", "Never Cry Wolf", "Local Hero", "Silkwood", "Under Fire", "Zelig", "Testament", "The Grey Fox", "Return of the Jedi", "Educating Rita", "The Right Stuff", "The Dresser", and "Star 80". Other movies, equally well done, will not fare so well because they are strange: "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence", "The Year of Living Dangerously", and "King of Comedy". Expertly-crafted horror films will scare off the Oscar: "Cujo", "The Dead Zone", and "The Entity". And some of the near-flawless youth-cult youth-cult movies will languish forever in adolescence for want of credibility: "Bad Boys", "Risky Business", "Valley Girl", "Baby It's You", and "Lords of Discipline". ACTRESSES: Our predictions for acting-award nominees are not clearly clear-ly divided between leading and supporting sup-porting categories, but the Academy will draw the lines of distinction in its own due time. Best Acress is a tossup. It's either Debra Winger or Shirley MacLaine for "Terms of Endearment", or Streep for "Silkwood". It will be a tough choice. It was a good year (finally) for female roles: Glenn Close, Mary Kay Place, JoBeth Williams and Meg Tilly, and four male actors, turned in the year's best ensemble performance in "Big Chill". Others too wonderful to forget: Jane Alexander as a mother watching wat-ching her children die of nuclear radiation radia-tion in "Testament". Julie Walters as the delightfully blunt ("Educating) Rita". Kate Nelligan as the mother of a kidnapped kid-napped child in "Without a Trace," un f x i ! j ' i Wednesday, January 11, 1984 Vernal ExpressHdvertlser 1 1 i Cinematic moms! ByDr.AiienHasSon awards predictions fortunately released 12 months ago. Mariel Hemingway as the tragic centerfold "Star 80", Dorothy Stratten. Mary Steenburgen as Marjorie Kin-nan Kin-nan Rawlings in "Cross Creek." Rosanna Arquette for "Baby It's You". Tess Harper for "Tender Mercies," Sandra Bernhard as DeNiro's kooky partner in "King of Comedy", Amanda Aman-da Plummer as "Daniel's tragic sister, and Cher for "Silkwood". Horror roles are extremely difficult, and Barbara Hershey ("The Entity") and Dee Wallace ("Cujo") deserve honors they won't get. ACTORS: Let's go with Robert Duvall as down-and-out country singer Mac Sledge in "Tender Mercies". Jack Nicholson (dang it, he makes it look easy!) can't be ignored, perhaps for a supporting nomination, as aging astronaut Garrett Breedlove in "Terms of Endearment". Other top contenders: Male leads in "Big Chill": William Hurt, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Berenger, and especially Kevin Kline. Ben (Gandhi) Kingsley for "Betrayal", ex-stuntman Richard Farnsworth as "The Grey Fox", Robert DeNiro as "King of Comdey", Sean Penn for "Bad Boys", Michael Caine for "Educating Rita", Eric Roberts for "Star 80", Albert Finny and Tom Courtney for "The Dresser", Dennis Quaid and Sam Shepard for "Right Stuff", Angelo Evans in Duvall's "Angelo My Love", Tim Hut-ton Hut-ton as "Daniel", Michael Keaton for "Mr. Mom", and Matthew Broderick for "War Games." , Others, clearly in supporting roles are Jeff Daniels and John Lithgow as Debra Winger's lovers in "Terms of Endearment", Gene Hackman for "Under Fire", Ed Harris as John Glenn in "Right Stuff" and as a villain in "Under Fire", and Jerry Lewis (serious at last, and excellent), in "King of Comedy". Not a chance, maybe, but why not Woody Allen for "Zelig"? Woody has played the fool long enough to bolster everyone's ego, and his portrayal as "Zelig" gave feeling to that film. I like Woody. He's Every-Me. Chameleons all, we are. The Other Guys. If "Return of the Jedi" doesn't get an Oscar for special effects, then there's no justice. And John Barry, who scored so many James Bond films, and won Oscars for his music in "Born Free" and "Lion in Winter," wrote the year's best movie song: "All Time High". Let's hope he is not forgotten at Oscar time. Finally, we predict that no Oscar will be given for the most memorable MATTER OF SEX Jean Stapleton is the leader of a group of female bank employees who bring a sex-discrimination sex-discrimination suit against their employer in "A Matter of Sex," airing MONDAY, JAN. 16 on "NBC Monday Night at the Movies." 'Fanny and Alexander' () (WW-2 Ch-1 OC-1 Sk-4) Special-interest Swedish film (English subtitles) getting short runs in mid-sized cities. Latest and final work by 65-year-old classic film expressionist ex-pressionist Ingmar Bergman, who'? always preoccupied with good ant. evil, and inner self, and man-made tragedy. Bergman had horrible childhood experiences, ex-periences, not unlike the children in this gorgeously photographed, excellently ex-cellently acted masterpiece that has 50-50 chance of winning Best Foreign Picture Oscar. ; Fanny and Alexander's father dies, ? leaving widow Emile (Ewa Froling) , and the two children (Pernilla Alwin, Bertil Guve). Emile remarries to despotic Bishop (Jan Malmsjo), who abuses them, while ghost of ex-husband ex-husband helplessly watches. Young Alexander wreaks telekenetic revenge. Allegoric beauty was never more grotesque, than young children subjected to psychological abuse, beating, homosexuality, parap-sychological parap-sychological demonology, screams of rage in mourning, and promiscuity among adults. Under Bergman, cruelty cruel-ty reaches its zenith as an art form. Will do well in art houses but be rejected re-jected by the general public. Rated R for explicit sex with a little nudity, violence, homosexuality, profanity, pro-fanity, excremental humor. 'Caboblanco' () (WW-l Ch-1 OC-2 Sk-1) Even Charles Branson's most ardent fans can't stifle the yawns in this incredibly in-credibly inept piece of cinematic claptrap clap-trap about buried treasure off the Peruvian coast. Why is Jason Robards in it? And what happened to his Spanish accent . in every third scene? Why does the camera jiggle incessantly? Why wasn't the film released when it was finished 4 years ago? Obvious. Branson's acting here is not up to his usual low standards, either. Don't say we didn't warn you! R for nudity,- violence, sex, profanity. WOULD YOU LIKE TO OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
