Show Page 4 CHURCH St. Francis Xavier Church i Thursday, December 14, 1981 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS For the first time in 30 years, a new council of the Knights of Columbus was organized in Utah. Initiation rites were held Sunday, Dec. 10 at St. Francis Xavier for some 40 members of the newly organized Bishop Hunt Chapter No. 5214 of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Robert E. Sorenson, District Deputy, who directed the organization of the chapter, stated that the new council will be comprised of raws members of the five parishes of Murray, Copperton, Midvale, Magna and Kearns. The Kinghts of Columbus Council will continue to seek membership from any eligible Catholic men from these five parishes who would desire to work in this fraternal organization spon- soring charity and patriotic functions. This council will go to the third level and is expected to be of great assistance to the priests of the five parishes. During the ceremonies, Mr. Royal Cobum, state deputy of the Knights u of Columbus, presented Father with a beautiful set of vestments for the prison chapel. The robes were made by the Carmalites with intricate detail. At the conclusion of the meeting, a social was held for the members and their wives. The council will hold their first meeting Friday a evening at 8 p.m. at the hall. Ben-vegn- Sunday evening, Dec.. 17 at 5 p.m. the annual Crib Ceremony will be ties to be used at Christmas. Newcomers to the parish are especially invited to attend this event. Dont forget Saturday, Dec, 16 Games night at St. Francis. Saturday is the big night for the drawing on the car loaded with groceries. The car will be loaded at Safeway some time this week and will be ready for the holder of the lucky ticket Saturday evening. One note of caution, you or your ticket must be there to win. If you cant be there, have a friend take your ticket. Numbers will be called until a winner is present. Opening game will be for $100 in 55 numbers. The big jackpot is now at $275. Following the raffle on the car, chances will be given at games parties for a complete Bell & Howell movie outfit. The drawing will be held the last Saturday before Easter and tickets will be awarded in the same manner as for the car, every $1 in games cards purchased, gives the buyer a free chance on the drawing. Tickets are still available for the gala New Years Eve party. Harold Rindlisbacks Orchestra will furnish the music for dancing and there will be all the food you can eat and a floor show, too. Better call one of these numbers right away and reserve your ticket at $5 per person: Maxine Mackin, CY Jean CY Odor, Dorothy Sheehan, AM or Wilma Schoonover, held at St. Francis Catholic Church. In a procession, the infant will be Carried into the church and placed in the crib. The event will be followed by Benediction. A Christmas program and party for the high school of religion, sponsored by the senior class, will be held Monday evening, Dec. 18 at AM 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Dec. 20, the Altar Society will have an Infant Jesus Birthday Party. Benediction and Rosary will be held at 7:45 followed by a pot-luc- k supper. Highlighting the evenings entertainment will be the Festival of Santa Lucia performed by the Luther League. From finalists Diane Swaim, Beverly Anderson and Karrie Hohenshelt. The Santa Lucia Bride will be chosen and crowned. The word Lucia comes from the Latin word lux meaning light. The Santa Lucia Festival symbolizes the changing of darkness to light. As the legend goes, Lucia was a beautiful maiden who lived in Sicily around 300 A.D. Although Christianity had scarcely been heard of there at that time, Lucia became a Christian possible through the witness of a nurse in her home. When Lucia was 17 years old, she was engaged to be married. However, here mother became seriously ill and Lucia prayed intently for her life and promised God to give her whole wedding dowry to the Church if her mother would get well. Her prayer was answered and she kept her promise. Her betrothed became so angry at this that he betrayed Lucia to the soldiers who were prosecuting the Christians at this time. They tried to bum her at the stake but although the flames en circled her they did not bum her.
