river avei to fort benton thence to the blackfoot fork of bitter root river river of the columbia thence to the great forks of the columbia where this route unites with the route from great salt lake laie I 1 after which union union they pursue their course down the columbia to fort vancouver where they again akgain fork and branch north to astoria and olympia and the other south to evales Q and albany we are not informed of all this mail route being as yet in an operation on the map is is shown also its eastern connect connections connection io I 1 s by prescott to la crosse and fort winnebago to milwaukee and chicago mail route no 2 starts from st joeph mo alo thence to fort kearny thence up the south platte until it reaches a point opposite foit grattan thence alon along the north platte to fort laramie la ramie and ald until it strikes the sweet water whence it skirts around the southeastern south eastern point of the wind river mountains to fort bridger and to great salt lak blakj city here the line forks one going off north as we w e have stated under route no 1 feeling on to the lewis fork of the columbia near fort hall and pursuing its route down the columbia to its intersection with nith route ro ute no 1 the other branch or rather the main main route after leaving great salt lake city strikes west to the humboldt which it follows through T h the mountains until it falls on to the isacca acra mento river thence by placerville erville and sacramento to san francisco this mail has for some time been ill in opera oceia tion and is is a great public convenience its eastern connections as laid down on the map are from st joseph east V ia a hannibal and st joseph railroad to hannibal and by north Alis missouri railroad to st louis and from dubuque iowa via fort des moines und and old fort calhoun to fort kearny route no 3 is is from independence mo alo west by fort atchison to santa fe new Al mexico exico this line has also been put into operation and is is very re regular its eastern connections are from independence by stage and Alis missour riv to tipton and pa pacific cefic railroad to st louis route no 4 is is from springfield mo alo to neosho thence west up tile llie canadian river river to san antonio and albuquerque thence west via via zuni and rio puerco to Chi chiqueta Chiq quota uoti and rio colorado
