Show life A6 MONDAY-JULY 16* 2007 ' " ' - • ' ^ - ' - • • ' ' • ' ^ STUP Harry and Co. cast and jaw-dropping spell Luke Hickman Life editor F or fans of the books as well as the nonreaders (or, as I like to call them, Muggles), the Harry Potter series has been something to look forward to every year and a half. This year the expectations are high and, unlike The Goblet of Fire, they are surpassed. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix breaks the HP mold that has been set in all the previous movies. Instead of the same boring trouble-at-home intro, this one kicks off throwing you right into the action that starts the snowball rolling. After a mysterious attack on his life and his personal standings in Hog warts, Harry and friends are thrust into the middle of danger when the villain Lord Voldemort begins gathering his army of darkness, planning an attack on the Ministry of Magic. After facing persecutions of non-believers, Harry decides to put together and train his own militant force called Dumbledore 's Army. Together they must piece together the clues of Voldemort's secrets and obtain a secret weapon that's been in Big • - • > ' • ' * < . ' - " • > ' - . v * " • ' • • ' • • V's sights for some time. With such a vast story to be told in such a short amount of time, the director and writers did a great job with cramming a lot of information tastefully into a short time slot. Never does it feel jumpy or unfocused, unlike the last. Order of the Phoenix Mows smoothly, yet fast. The only beef to be had is that the middle section of the movie feels very episodic, as if you're watching small event after event leading up to the climax. It's like hearing someone tell a long story by saying, "And then...and then...and then." With ail of that said, know that this is the only distracting fault. There is never a dull moment. It is always fun. And these kids have really stepped it up with their performances. They go from being funny teenagers to serious young adults, and even to small natural. HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX breaks the HP mold that has been set in all the previous movies. human, emotional scenes. With the exception of The Goblet of Fire, the great thing about the HP movies is that you do not need to know the books to understand the movies {The Goblet of Fire really botched up on that one). Unfortunately, you do need to know the previous movies to follow the latest one. You need one and two for character development and it isn't until the third that the ball begins rolling. Not having read the books, it will be fun to see where the next two go, seeing as how there's a war brewing now. NOTE: The final battle sequence was filmed for 3D IMAX; so if you see it at Jordan Commons, the movie's finale jumps to fill the IMAX screen and instructs you to put on 3-D glasses to see the huge event really fold out in front of your eyes.
