Show new/ Cannon at UVSC A4 From CANNON- A1 Cannon's speech led to numerous questions from the audience, especially in regard to governmental ethics and the media. Jason Nichols, a teacher in the Communications Department, asked for Cannon's perspective on federal shield laws to protect journalists. Cannon's response did not call for shield laws, but he saw that we might move that way in the future. Cannon also discussed issues with the FEC, saying that he was recently audited and that it was the "cleanest audit they [the FEC] have ever done." He did remark that campaign finance laws "make it almost impossible for an incumbent to be beat," and that transparency is what helps ethics in this area. Cannon also suggested that financial contributions not be limited, "It is not appropriate to constrain speech, even through money." Cannon spoke briefly on the new Supreme Court nominee, John Roberts, and the change in governmental ethics since he has been in office. MONDAY* SEPTEMBER 19-2005 Math awareness week FromMATH-AI know basic mathematic skills. There really is no need for calculators. We feel in a lot of ways that it is a big hindrance to their learning." Student Body President, Jared Sumsion, told the College Leadership Council earlier this month, "I took math at BYU because I could use a calculator." Sumsion is not the only student from UVSC taking math at BYU. A new company, "easiestmathever.com" is dedicated solely to getting UVSC students through Math 1050. Using BYU Independent Study to get the 1050 credit, the course allows for use of calculators and the passing grade is a C-. Turnquist offered no comment in response to questions about students leaving UVSC to take math courses elsewhere. Turnquist claims the failure rate at UVSC is "very normally distributed." This may be the case, as College Algebra is one of the highest failing classes nationwide. UVSC seems to be following this trend, according to the Department of Institutional Research studies show that Vegor Pedersen/NetXNews Jaime Escalante 35 percent of Math 1050 students will have to retake the course. Campus-wide there is a move to make math more accessible to students. Last week's "Math Awareness Week" was part of this attempt to change the image of math. Activities ranged from films about math, to games and puzzles as well as speakers, including Jaime Escalante, the math teacher that inspired the 1988 film "Stand and Deliver." Escalante has helped students from one of the poorest schools in the country rank seventh in the national ranking for high school calculus students. Escalante said, "There should be no excuses in your desire to learn, you must be willing to sacrifice."
