Show Your News PAGE A3 MONDAY, MARCH 21, 2005 A pack of Woverines amongst the Owlz Autumn Nielson Asst. News Editor Earlier this month the managerial staff of the Orem Owlz received new team members, three of the five being either current or alumni UVSC students. Co-General Manager Zachary Fraser (in the interest of full disclosure, Fraser contributes to the sports section of The College Times), Assistant General Manager Sarah Hansen, and Director of Public Relations Karrie Broderick, are now feverishly working to prepare for the Owlz first season. The Owlz are flying under a new name, new management, and a new stadium, all of which are the very finest available in Minor League Baseball. Fraser is currently a student at UVSC and plans to graduate in April. Fraser's story of his rise from a business major at UVSC to the general manager of a MLB team is a credit to the college and the education the school provides. Fraser attributes his job now to "a business management class at UVSC." Fraser attained his original job with the Provo Angels because of a "business analysis done for the team for a management 3600 class. They liked the work so much they called and offered me a job." Fraser became the director of media relations of the Provo Angels, and by default the broadcast voice for the team as well. Fraser states although the pay for the job was less than ideal, he knew it was an opportunity he could not pass up. "My goal and my dream have always been to work in Guslomcr Service sports. I was lucky the timing was perfect to get the opportunity." Fraser accredits his experience at UVSC in building the confidence needed to take that step. Although he hadn't graduated, he said, "If it wasn't for the classes, and the hands-on atmosphere on campus, I wouldn't have this job." It was this confidence, and the knowledge that success only comes with risk, that motivated Fraser's decision. When the team officially became the Orem Owlz, Fraser became the director of communications and marketing, and a few weeks ago he was hired as the general manager of the Orem Owlz, along with Ryan Pace. Even with the pressure that comes with his new position, Fraser loves his job, because it is a job "you can be passionate about." One of Fraser's favorite perks about his new job is the business card and what it represents. "I love that I have a business card that has the Angels logo on it, showing that I work for an organization in close contact with a major league team... I work for a baseball team." As a general manger, Fraser has taken on a multitude of tasks. He and Pace are responsible for everything from revenue flow and season tickets, to the bus and hotel contracts for the players. "We do everything. We are responsible for anything imaginable. That is why we tried really hard to have a good staff," As a co-general manager of the team, Ryan said, "We work all day, don't take breaks, and run around put- Influential aviator speaks Laurie Shore News Writer Vegor Pedersen/NetXNews UVSC's own Zachary Fraser was recently named co-general manager of the Orem Owlz minor league baseball team. ting out fires all day. It isn't a standard job." Other firefighters on the staff include recent UVSC graduate Karrie Broderick, and Sarah Hansen, who received her Associates Degree here. Fraser speaks highly of these two women and the trust they inspire. "We have to trust them, because if we mess up on our job, the whole community knows," Pace said. The managing staff also has the responsibility for being the face of the team in the community. By hiring Broderick as a public relations director, Fraser hopes to include the community in the Owlz games. "Karrie is very good in front of people, and has the personality to really involve people." Along with Fraser, Broderick speaks very highly of the experience she had at UVSC and the training she received. "UVSC helped me with the contacts that I have made. A lot of my classes were projects and hands-on experiences with real businesses. I wasn't just working on papers. We were out marketing for a real company." Sarah Hansen also agrees with her. "I think that UVSC did a really good job of providing real life experiences in classes, more so than other schools." Broderick will also be working hand in hand with the Hispanic Relations Director Veronica Legaspy, who is following the Owlz Manager trend and graduating from UVSC in April. Fraser is putting high importance on the integration of the "80,000 Hispanics, which have never been specifically welcomed in this community." Fraser is especially impressed with the diversity that is found on his staff, and hopes that it will help to welcome a broader range of fans, especially from UVSC. "We love being neighbors with UVSC, and they are a wonderful host. Hopefully in the years to come we will have a good symbiotic relationship with the school." The Owlz' season and UVSC's baseball season are both starting soon, for more information on the Owlz, look to the web at www.oremowlz. com, and any information wanted on UVSC's baseball team is on the school's website. Sergei Sikorsky, son of aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky, spoke March 16 at UVSC. Sikorsky highlighted the history of flight from man's infatuation, through its early failures, and its eventual successes. Igor Sikorsky invented the helicopter and the first multiengine aircraft. He knew and worked with Charles Lindbergh and Howard Hughes, among others. Through all this aviation history, Sergei was along for the ride. As Ron Smart, UVSC Director of Aviation, said, "This is like having the Wright Brothers here." Sikorsky's father's history in itself is remarkable. Igor Sikorsky's dream of the helicopter becoming a reality was inspired by drawings of Leondardo di Vinci and a description of a helicopter in a Jules Verne book. Sikorsky said the passage that stuck in his father's head read, "Anything that one man can imagine, other men can make come true." Igor Sikorsky was born in Russia and eventually moved to the United States. Before that move, he had already designed and built the first multi-engine aircraft. This success allowed him to meet and show off his invention to Czar Nicholas II. Impressed with the aircraft, Nicholas gave Igor a gold pocket watch. This watch was on display here at UVSC at the conclusion of Sergei's lecture. "These inventors had to design, build and try to fly their Byron Swogger/Nef-XNews Sergei Sikorsky inventions all without guidance or insurance of safety," Sikorsky said. Sikorsky notes the ability of the helicopter to be used in rescue missions, fire fighting, medical transport 'tc. "It is estimated that the helicopter used in these types of functions has saved an estimated two million lives," said Sikorsky. In his closing remarks, Sikorsky attributed the success of his father and those like him to a single word: freedom. He added that his father had the freedom to dream, to take a chance, the freedom to build, and even the freedom to risk his life for what he believed in. "Freedom is the only way human beings can create," Sikorsky said. At the conclusion of his remarks, Ron Smart awarded Sikorsky with an award from UVSC department of aviation for his contributions to the field. In addition, Smart added that an aviation scholarship is in design in Sergei Sikorsky's name. Smart said that hearing a man like Sikorsky speak can "fuel the dream of aviation students to take us to the next level." OREM LOCATION Build Your Future With Convergys!
