Show SPORTS B6 Big numbers in big win over the Coyotes Justin Baker and Geddes Robinson both have record-breaking game. By Kira Terry Sports Editor Maryott/UVU Review Senior Justin Baker sunk a season-high 17 points off the bench CASPER continued "I've been fortunate having been able to play a lot on my own the last year in tournaments unattached so that I was ready to perform this well already. It was a pretty awesome feeling to win my first colligate event." Casper's first round of 5 under par, which was highlighted by his eagle on the par-5 12th hole, had him within striking distance of the leader at the end of the day. Casper would proceed to record a final round of 70 and finish 7 under par on the event, winning UVU's first individual title since September of 2007. "Mason's win was huge," said Coach Chris Curran. "To win in your first collegiate event is almost unheard of. He played very solid and had a very hot putter the whole tournament." Casper has high hopes for the program already and appears to be rubbing off on the rest of the team as the Wolverines finished third as a team, which is a season best. "This is one of the best finishes in a long time," said Curran. "It proves we can play with anyone in the country. I'm very proud of our guys. Even though Mason won, it was a team effort. The program is headed in the right direction. This is just the beginning of what our guys are capable of." Stratton Schulz continued right from where he left off last fall, shooting an even-par 72 for both rounds to finish 12th overall. Andrew Carlin did his best to contribute, also shooting a first-round 72 while finishing with a 2-over-par 74 to fall in a tie for 23rd. "We worked this offseason on course management and playing high percentage golf," said Curran. "We played very smart and executed the game plan." The Wolverines will tee it up again March 11-12 at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore. where Curran looks to build off last week's performance. against the University of South Dakota. Utah Valley's only conference loss this season was Jan. 22 when they faced the University of South Dakota. Last Thursday, the Wolverines looked to not repeat that when the Coyotes came to town. TRACK continued Nelson was recognized for her efforts as she was named GWC Athlete of the Week as announced Feb. 16. Allah Laryea-Akrong was also named GWC Athlete of the Week for his third place finish in the 200 meters at the Husky Invitational with a time of 21.63. His time in the 200 was also the fastest in the GWC this season. He would also go on to finish tied for fourth with a time of 6.89 in the 60 meters. While at Boise State, Becky Reeves set a new school record in the weight throw at 54 feet, while Makira Kuan nearly broke the record in the high jump. Kuan's jump of 5-5 gave her the win in the event. This was Kuan's second time winning the event as she did in the BYU Invitational earlier this season. Houle is proud of what the team has done so far and said, "Our kids can run with any school in the country. Being able to go against Washington, Oregon, Alabama, and schools like that, and be able to place as high as we did, just shows that if given the opportunity, they can compete at that level." The team will compete this weekend in the GWC Championships in Bronx, N.Y., where they will continue to look for chances to represent at nationals the following week on March 4 and 5. The outdoor season starts the same days, when the team travels to Las Vegas for the UNLV invitational. At the half, the Wolverines had given themselves a 13-point lead going into the locker room at 51-38. 41 Freshman Ben Aird led the Wolverines offensively, putting up 18 points and bringing down nine rebounds. A handful of Wolverines followed Aird, putting up big points. Senior Justin Baker put up a season-high 17 points, Williams finished with 17, Holton Hunsaker with 16, and Swarbrick with 12. "I think Justin was at his best and ended up with a heck of a statistical game and was very productive," said Coach Hunsaker. "If we get everybody going and playing well we can be productive in a lot of positions." Wolverine Geddes Robinson finished with a double-double, 15 points and 13 rebounds, while breaking the school record of doubledoubles in a season with seven. The Wolverines will play their final regular season home game this Saturday when they host Houston Baptist at 7:00 p.m. in the UCCU Center. 11111M111— c' ?E11111 Tuesday & Wednesday March 8 & 9 10am-4pm (5pm-7pm on Tuesday also in front of the Bookstore ) • GET REA.% OR GRADV ArtiON ALL IN ONE PLACE! uvu Sponsored by UVU Bookstore Cap & Gown Honor Cords & Medallions Diploma Frames Announcements School Rings UVU Apparel & more |
