Show CD Ushering in Springtime with The Festival of Colors •JESSICA BURNHAM . •' Culture editor Celebrated largely in countries with large Hindu populations such as India, Nepal and Bangladesh, the Festival of Colors is also held yearly at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork. Among other significances, the festival is meant to recognize the passing of winter and hail the coming of spring. Literally thou- sands of people participated in this year's festival which held on March 26. The celebration consisted of the throwing of colored powder, dancing. drama, chanting, delicious food, music and a bonfire. "For one afternoon people cover each other in colored powders, and our differences are erased in one swipe," saysjCharu Das, temple priest and manager of Holi, also known as The Festival of Colors. 'This graphic demonstration leaves everyone looking ridiculous, and in that moment, mistrusts evaporate and there is a tremendous feeling of community." For safety reasons, colored powder from outside the festival is not allowed. Although the powders are dry and non-staining, guests are warned against wearing their best clothing. "It's a really fun holiday, but you should expect all of your belongings to get ruined. Choose your clothes accordingly," says UVU student Greg Wilson. Those who would prefer not to participate in the coloring process may watch the excitement from within the shelter of the temple. The spiritual aspect of the festival is achieved not only through a connection Pick of the week with one another, but with the divine. .; "We are all parts a n d ^ j parcels of God and we '?>*•; achieve a oneness with him through the chanting of his holy names," Charu Das said. Monson set his sights on lifelong vegan Joaquin Phoenix with little hope of attaining him, as he had just finished making "Gladiator." "Instead of getting a narrator with just a good voice, it would be great to have someone who lived it their whole lives," Monson said. After initial difficulty making contact and six months of searching elsewhere, Monson tried again and was invited to send some footage, "I sent over like 15 minutes of stuff I have edited and three days later I got a phone call saying 'Joaquin wants to meet you.' We looked at the footage together and Joaqin and I spent three hours talking about different issues. He agreed to do it before the meeting was even done, without having read the narration, and next thing we were in the studio recording," Monson said. It took about five years for Monson to piece together and edit footage shot on the streets, at animal shelters, pet stores, puppy mills, factory farms, slaughterhouses, leather and fur farms, sporting events, circuses and vivisection labs. Although he did some of his own filming, much of the footage was submitted anonymously to organizations such as The Humane Society and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). "A lot of these people are vegan and they go in these places and they've got to eat meat, they have to completely act like handlers and they are putting their lives at risk," Monson said.
