The light poles were lowest amount of square feet than any other statefunded school in Utah. "In most of my classes I have felt that there are way too many students. 'In fact, in two of my classes last semester students had to grab chairs from the hallway to sit in every day," said Heidi Gainer, a UVU student. Gainer said that the PE and LA buildings are too crowded, but that everywhere feels standard for a college. "I think UVU is a good school, but I think there is definitely room for progress," Gainer said. "I went down to Dixie for a year and felt that I was much more involved and appreciated there than I do at UVU." * In response to space concerns, the University will have Divisional reports on campus space on Feb. 12 from 8 to noon in SC 206c* The official student increase numbers and other school statistics will be released sometime in March. Response: We could not agree more with this concern. The administration is working on a temporary lighting system in lieu of the replacement lighting that is forthcoming. We have been told to anticipate the new system by the end of the semester. - David Smith, VP of Academics feach floorWSKfe library needs a directory. UVU's proposed second-tier tuition increase per semester is as follows: • Resident tuition increase of 6 to 10% or $96 to $159 • Non-resident tuition increase of 1.75 to 2.9% or $96 to $159 ALL CONCERNED STUDENTS AND CITIZENS ARE INVITED TO A PUBLIC HEARING ON THE PROPOSED INCREASE TO BE HELD TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2009, AT 12:00 NOON, IN CENTRE STAGE. H BRITNEE NGUYEN News editor I In an effort to help young Latino students prepare for college, UVU student volunteers and- faculty members hosted local eighth graders last week. Around 36 Latino eighth graders from Centennial Middle School in Provo came to UVU as part of the school's Latino Outreach program. In an all-day event, the students learned about college opportunities by playing interactive games, taking a tour of the school and hearing about college students' experiences. "[Our goal] is for students to capture the vision of what college has to offer,1' said Kyle Reyes, Latino Outreach coordinator. Several of the eighth graders Vaised their hands when asked if they had been on campus before and if they would like to attend UVU. "I hope they are able to take education seriously and realize there's opportunity to succeed," said Yazmin Montero, a UVU student and the Latino Outreach assistant coordinator. "This event helps students see the diversity at UVU and hopefully they can see themselves here." "[Our goal] is for students to capture the vision of what college has to offer," Kyle Reyes, Latino Outreach coordinator They provided group interactive games such as playing "Survivor" where the students were given play dough to make items such as a car, a man playing Frisbee with his son or a lady sitting on a sofa. To make it challenging, some students were given restrictions such as no speaking, no using hands or can't use thumbs. This activity helped students learn to work to".1 gether despite weaknesses. Reyes explained that the Latino Outreach program provides around four activities a week. There are two Latino programs with which UVU students can get ir^ volved - the Latin American club and Latino Unidios. The UVU Latin American club creates an environment for students to further thefr education and be successful in the community. Latino Unidios is a mentoring pn> gram where UVU students help young Latino K-12 students at local schooll We have many volunteer opportunities and are always looking for students to participate," Reyes said.
