In its first time qualifying for the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II Western Regional Tournament, Utah Valley lost its opening game to Utah State 6-5. The loss set up a game against BYU, a week earlier than the scheduled game, and knocked the Wolverines out of contention for a national tournament berth. Doug Wenglare scored two goals for Utah Valley in the loss. Kent Arsenault led the Aggies with three goals. BYU lost to Denver the same day, and then again to Utah Valley 4-3 on the final day of the tournament. The final game of the season also came against BYU on Friday night. After dropping the first game of the doubleheader to the Bears 12-1, Utah Valley drove in six runs in the top of the third in game two after Adam Openshaw double scored Scott Croshaw and Jace Brinkerhoff. The lead wouldn't last after a threerun blast in the bottom of the eighth put the Bears up 8-7. Utah Valley would tie it up in the ninth when Kai Hatch doubled to lead off the inning and later scored after a bases loaded walk. The game was called in the ninth due to darkness, preserving the tie for the Wolverines. Utah Valley finished the weekend 0-3-1, recording their first tie while playing at the Division 1 level. In the Wolverines' first two games against Santa Clara, Utah Valley lost 12-2 and 7-2. Utah Valley's first game in Utah County will take place when the Wolverines play at BYU on March 11. Their first home game isn't until March 25, against the University of Utah. |
