Show MONDAY, JANUARY 14, 2008 . THE COLLEGE TIMES New; A5 MLKfromAl Luther King, Jr. in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s, civil rights crusader Morris Dees, John Echohawk, executive director of the Native American Rights Fund and Yolanda King, Daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr. Another major event for the commemoration is the performance of "Black Boy" on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Ragan Theater. This adapted for the stage play from Richard Wright's autobiography tells the story of Wright's struggles growing up in the South with racism in the early 1900s, and has been recognized nationally for its discussion on racism and inequality in America. The office of academic affairs donated seventy-five copies of Richard Wright's "Black Boy" in preparation for the event. The books are meant to "read and pass on," where after an individual reads the book is able to write his or her name and comments inside, and then pass on to someone else that wants to read it. These books are available at Michael Freeman's office in the library (LC-403) or from many of the MLK Ad- visory Board members. The UVSC Student Service Council and BYU Service Council are also sponsoring Community Outreach Day/Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 21. All participants should meet at 9 a.m. at the BYU Wilkinson Center, where there will be more than 25 service projects in which students and community members can participate. CONGRESSMAN from Al With the election season becoming such a topic of concern for governmental officials and citizens alike, Gannon was not shy about he candidate he has chosen o endorse. He spoke fondly of presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The congressman spoke of how he heard Romney speak in church and :hat the candidate has a lot of :harisma. Cannon said that he problem Romney is havng is the ability to connect .vith people. On the topic of the presidential campaign in general, annon said. "Anyone ambiious enough to run for presi- ^ Give me your tired dent should be disqualified. Elections draw us from civility. Lawmaking draws us into civility." The congressman was asked if he believed the election process was a broken system. Cannon agrees that the election process is flawed and that things are always changing in the way candidates attempt to be elected. He said the most important thing is to, "Know [the candidate's] track record and push for someone that stands for something." In defense to the current election process, he said that it "produces people who are capable." Representative Cannon then switched gears as he talked about the college generation's need for free information. Cannon said that as the media has progressed, so has the nation's attitude for entitlement of knowledge. He compared this attitude to the issue surrounding illegally downloaded music. Cannon ended his speech by saying that these type of situations are what are going to be hard for this generation. Cannon is now in his 1 lth year as a member of Concress. uvcollegetimes.com ^ UVSC welcomes donated cars, great tax write-off for donators DaveIba Aiicunt Photo ed'tor | ! I 1 - : : UVSC's automotive department is looking to improve its program and to give more experience to its student's by looking for people who are willing to donate old, new, or used cars, which in turn is a great way to receive a tax writeoff for donators. In the past, cars have been brought in to be donated to the school. This has been a huge benefit to the school's automotive program, collision repair department, as well as to the donators. When bringing in a car to donate to the department, donators are given a receipt for the car's determined worth. Donators will sign the car over to UVSC and receive a letter from the school which states that a car was donated to the school for training purposes. "Most of the cars that are donated are worn out, or there is something wrong with them. So people will donate them, which gives my guys the experience to learn how to re-build the engine, brakes and so on," said UVSC automotive professor Todd Low. "We'll pull it apart and rebuild it a few times and the educational part of this is great for us and our students." The automotive department accepts and is in need for educational purposes of your old or new cars that have been in accidents, or are unused. This donation process has been a crucial part of the education experience for students and a help to the program's growth, to give students the experience that is required to further their skills. The automotive deportment accepts and is in need for educational purposes of your old or new cars that have been in accidents, or ore unused.
