Show MONDAY • JUNE 12 '2006 A6 The Break- Up Luke Hickman Life Writer Even though summer is here, Hollywood has only given us a couple good movies thus far. It's been so disappointing that you could even call it a drought. We had one good action flick in May-Mission Impossible III-and one, so far, in June-77ie Break-Up. First off, you need to know that The Break-Up is not the happy little romantic comedy that everyone thinks it's going to be. We see Vince Vaughn and automatically think it'll be another Wedding Crashers. We see Jennifer Aniston and think we're about to become one of her 'friends' again. We're all wrong. THE BREAK-UP is about a couple whose nonexistent personal communication eventually leads to the end of a relationship that they've been striving to make work. Both are clinging to straws in an attempt to stop themselves from going under. One thing that makes The Break-Up such a great movie is how it works on so many levels. Yes, there are a lot of classic Vince Vaughn moments that will have the theater laughing so loud that you wont be able to hear the next few lines. Yes, there are some romantic moments. But don't forget that the movie is called The Break-Up. Breaking up isn't very fun. It's very serious* as are so many moments in this film. Some of the arguing and fighting scenes will make you feel as uncomfortable as if you were a third-party friend sitting in the room that they were arguing in. Another thing that makes it better than any other film of it's kind is that it doesn't make the male lead look like a complete idiot, like he's the cause of all the problems. While Vaughn's character has a few big flaws that hurt the relationship, it's Aniston's character that antagonizes the situation to its breaking point. Thank goodness for Vince Vaughn's writing to not always make us men look like the jerks in every relationship! All in all, the experience you'll have with The BreakUp will be a good one-one that will at least have you thinking about what you've just seen for a while. There is a great message to be learned. It's great to finally have so many great elements combined in a well rounded movie that's ending result is filled with actual sustenance and not just cheap filler. music moment Sober Down Megan Leavitt Life Writer v Ever had one of those days that are so epic, you remember them for the rest of your life? My most recent epic, memorable day occurred on Thursday, May 25, 2006, when Utah County (otherwise known as the UC) sent its cool factor through the roof by hosting one of the greatest bands that I have ever heard. The band was Sober Down, and I was introduced to them in the most unlikely of places: Provo's Center Street during the annual Thanksgiving Point Classic bike race. Sober Down is a new band homegrown in Provo. The band consists of Aaron Fox and his ridiculous vocals and guitar; Jake Freeze, who brings insane bass lines which are co-written by the make-your-toe-tap-and-yourhead-bang drummer Tim Basset; and who can forget the face-melting guitar styling of John Hammond? Each of these guys adds a level of musical ability that cannot be matched by anyone, anywhere, on songs like the unbelievable "Rest in This." In order to fully describe the uniqueness of Sober Down, I can only relate it to a home cooked meal, comfort food made by your mom. If Sober Down's music was a meal, imagine reggae as the main course with a side of punk; for a vegetable, throw in some' good old fashion rock and roll (just because it's healthy for you). For dessert, add a little more reggae and top it all off with just a little grunge for good measure. If that doesn't get you, maybe this will: wash the meal down with a tasty beverage mixed with equal parts Ben Harper and Taking Back Sunday, a splash of MXPX, a splash of Jimmy Eat World and a dash of Pearl Jam and served with a sprig of Bob Marley. Put it all together, and the result might get close to the amazing sound of Sober Down. For example, take the song that I mentioned before, "Rest in This." This song is one that you will end up singing along to because the lyrics are so incredibly addicting. Then you have to stop and listen to the instruments because they are all making a phenomenal sound. I love this song because it as every element that makes a great song. "Sober Down is the one real great talent to come out of Provo!" claims Jordan, an avid fan. I couldn't agree more. Oh, sure, some of you might say, "But Megan, what about the Osmonds? What about the Used? What about fantastic movies of Mormon hilarity, like THE SINGLES WARD or THE HOME TEACHERS?" Yes, yes, these are all great things, but none of them can even come close to Sober Down. This band is truly amazing and you will consider yourself lucky to have heard them. So where can you hear them? Well, because the UC doesn't have a regular music scene, you'll need to exercise a little faith and look for Sober Down performanceflyers.I'll do my best to let you know when and where these guys are playing, along with other great bands, both local and mainstream. Musically, the summer of 2006 is off to a great start, promising to be one of the greatest music-filled summers the state of Utah has seen in a long time. Watch for these fantastic bands in concert: Panic at the Disco (July 24 at the Venue, tickets are SIS); Ben Harper (August 22 at USANA, tickets start at $20). But if you can only go to one concert this summer, make sure you don't miss Death Cab for Cutie, playing right here at UVSC's McKay Events Center on August 8th (tickets start at $25). In addition to some great concerts, there are also some unbelievable albums coming out this summer: the new Pearl Jam is a must-have in any collection; and keep your eyes open for the new AFI album, hitting stores on June 6.1 will let you know about other concerts and albums as the summer progresses. 'Till then, keep it real and support your local musicians. :£^^^ COllC<)C t i m e / C l O / / i f i e C l / -(801) 863-8688 cinthonro@UY/c.e<Ju help wonted Sell advertising for The College Times Student advertising salesperson wanted.
