Show /port/ A8 MONDAY-APRIL 17 -2006 Vance Rants grading time From RANT-A12 ship only six years ago, you'd think the Wolverines would compete at the D-I level with at least a little more consistency in 2006. Coincidentally, UVSC has the same coach now as it did during those championship days, but unfortunately, headman Todd Fairbourne hasn't been able to get his girls to win any more than those few games they absolutely should win. Sweeping Albertson College is great, but an occasional win over Utah or Long Beach State is a must as well, just to show that you belong. It's no secret Fairbourne can coach, but at the moment, things aren't clicking at all. D+ off-season recruiting job. I couldn't imagine too many high school prospects wanting to follow-up on a tough year like that, but Nixon as the second best D-I newcomer in 04. That found a way to bring them in anyway. I'd be record dropped considerably the next year unwilling to bet there wasn't another Division I der Smart, and slightly again under Wagar; not school in America that started four freshmen, necessarily a trend you want to be seeing. An and if there is, they certainly didn't win 11 + injury to star forward Carolyn Theurer late in games like the Wolverines did (including wins the year didn't help either, but you gotta figure against Fresno State and Gonzaga whom they they can do better than 2-13 on the road. C- lost to by 46 a season ago). Center Robyn Fairbanks leads this freshman crop. She only averaged 17.6 points and 8.6 boards a game Vollcyball The adage may get old, but it'll always be while shooting 53 percent from the field. She true. It doesn't matter how you start a season, was also selected to the All-Independent First rather how you finish one. Starting the year Team. In short, Fairbanks is not supposed to 8-10, as long as you finish with a record of be here. A18-11, is okay. That's what happened to Sam Atoa's group, capping their regular season by winning five of their final six matches before Men's Basketball breezing their way through the Independent Ronnie Price left a whole lot of offense on the Tournament. Taking your lumps can be the table with his departure to Sacramento. Little best thing that ever happens to a team, if they did anybody know it would actually be filled learn from it. by a team of individuals wanting a piece of the A- pie suddenly available after Price's 24 points a game vanished with his graduation. In '05-06, you had much of the same story; a team tough Wrestling to beat at home, a team horrendously careless The men in one-piece-suits wound up with on the road, and a McKay Center emptier than much the same story. They lost their first six an Enron boardroom. No doubt, a December duals, and then shot back to win seven of their win in Tempe, AZ tops the list of surprises, final eight, and finished up an even 9-9 on the but even the ASU upset doesn't make up for a year; a huge improvement from a 3-12-1 resub-par 4-11 road record, including collapses cord in their previous campaign. Senior's Eragainst Maryland-Eastern Shore and Clevekin Tadzhimetov and Ivan Bigney did wonders land State where the Wolverines had the lead to build the program, but their biggest loss is the recent departure of head coach Cody Sand- for all but the last few remaining seconds of erson. It?ll be extremely tough to replace that the game. However, against the other D-I Inkind of name recognition, and to find some- dependents (which is really how their season body able to continue to attract top-notch kids should be ultimately measured), UV stood out once again by going 10-3. You can complain at this stage in UVSC's young program. about Dick Hunsaker all you want, but the guy B takes care of business. Women's Basketball In short, l04-05 was atrocious with only a handful of wins to show for at season's end; however, credit Coach Cathy Nixon with a stellar cla//ified/ help wonted Sell advertising Tor The College Times Student advertising salesperson wanted. 20-25 hours per week. The Sun Devils were ranked all season long and ended up in College Baseball's World Series final four at season's end. However, since that shocker last May, Utah Valley has only gone a combined 11-31. As UV first baseman put it to me a couple weeks ago, they can't seem to get their offense, defense and pitching all working together at the same time. Coach Gardner and company seriously have their work cut out for them as they look to build the concept of consistency. COverall grade BRemember, that what UVSC attempted back in 2003 has never been done before in the history of collegiate athletics, so it's hard for me not to give them the benefit of the doubt as their transitionary period continues. The question now becomes, what will their next progress report look like coming up here in 2009? Seems like a long way away huh? Jackie- Mapleton Well Jackie, tell your husband we're not birds. Our reproductive system is actually a lot like yours really. We breed between May and August, and nidation usually occurs sometime between November and March. Young are born fully furred with closed eyes and non-erupted teeth. All right, maybe not exactly like your kind, but I do know there's no eggs involved anywhere. You ever notice the difference between UVSC's baseball and softball facilities right now? There's got to be a way we can bridge that gap some. Lou- Orem Almost anything stacked up to the new stadium is going to look sub-par, but I could see how the girls might feel a little jipped when their baseball brothers are out lounging in their own brand new clubhouse/locker room/weight room/ whirlpool/coach's office. If you're asking me to do something about it, I would tell you that's not possible. Other than maybe the basketball teams and now men's baseball, everybody wants a new facility. Hopefully softball can survive until they do end up getting a new one. PRESCHOOL teachers & housekeeper. Part-time mornings or afternoons MF. Excellent support staff and training. Call 377-2161.
