This unique musical group focuses on the brilliant music of the German and Austrian masters of the eighteenth century like Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, and Haydn. This talented orchestra has performed at many events such as the Utah Arts Festival, the Temple Square Concert Series, and musical festivals at Sundance. Most members of Nachtmusik Chamber Orchestra are professional musicians and many are award winning soloists. Nachtmusik members often perform in ornate period costumes from the eighteenth century, Complete With l a c e , Courtesy photo/Dr. /harden Pond ruffles, and powdered wigs. The orchestra's conductor, called the Kapellmeister, is one of UVSC's most talented professors. Dr. Marden Pond. Dr. Pond is a recognized composer and has received numerous commissions to create ballet, film, and concert scores on local and national labels. As the conductor of Nachtmusik, he is known for his special ability to create a dynamic relationship between the musicians and the audience. The Chocolate Dreams Concert is sponsored every year by the German Dept. at UVSC in order to give people an unforgettable taste of Germany's rich culture. So where does the chocolate come in? Well, this is no ordinary concert. In between the harmonious music of Germany's finest composers, the audience will enjoy a literal feast of German chocolate confec- tions. Specialties this year will include Black Forest Cherry Cake, Viennese Chocolate-apricot Cre-me Cake, and the famous Mozartkugeln (rumored to be Mozart's favorite cookie). Because of this enchanting combination of stirring music and scrumptious treats, this night is guaranteed to be a feast for the senses. Audience members will also be humored by anecdotes from Dr. Pond and invited to participate in the music through dancing and applause. Nachtmusik's performances have been hailed by critics as "a treat for the ears, the eyes, and the heart". The Deseret News raves Nachtmusik as "an intelligent and masterful performance." Says Laura Johnston, chair of UVSC's German Dept. about the Chocolate Dreams Concert, "It's almost like you go into a dreamland and forget all your cares and troubles. It's so enjoyable and uplifting that you are literally swept away by the melodiousness and deliciousness of the evening." This night will surely give students a unique and captivating chance to experience the richness of other cultures. The breathtaking experience of hearing live orchestra music is a chance that shouldn't be missed. So in the words of Johnston "Even if the only German music you know is by Ramstein, this evening may be something you carry with you forever." Chocolate Dreams will begin at 7:30, Thursday in the UVSC Grande Ballroom. Costing a mere $3 for students and $5 for general admission, get a head start with your Valentine this year and enjoy a luscious chocolate experience accompanied by some of the most beautiful music in the world. The Matador (which, in my opinion, is the second best "hit man" flick next to Grosse Pointe Blank) is here! For some odd reason that we're not used to in Utah Valley, its limited release included Provo Towne Center's Cinemark Theaters. Imagine Pierce Brosnan as Julian Noble, a horny mustache-wearing sexist whose shirt is halfway unbuttoned, revealing grey chest hair and gold chains. As if that's not bad enough, he just so happens to be an emotional wreck and a hired assassin. If that doesn't sound like his best role yet I don't know what does. After realizing he hasn't a friend to celebrate his birthday with, in a hotel bar in Mexico City, Julian forces his way into the life of Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear), a failing salesman trying to close a business deal. Danny finds the excitement his life lacks in Julian, and Julian finds the safety of relationships his life lacks in Danny. From the moment Julian realizes what Jife should be like, he goes downhill until to the point where he can't finish . a hit. The chemistry between Brosnan and Kinnear is perfect. Their relationship is what carries the movie. It is somewhat predictable and not too original, but those two keep you glued to the screen and enjoying every moment of it. If you're not a fan of dark, offensive comedies stay away because you won't be entertained. But if you're like me, you'll take to the dark satire and enjoy every moment of it. When the subject of rap music comes up most people think about the East Coast, West Coast, or the "dirty" South. Unknown to most, however, is that Utah has a powerful hip-hop movement taking placerightnow. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with one of the leaders of the movement: The MemoryMan from the rap duo One-Five. One-Five was officially formed in 1998 when George McDonald (a.k.a. The MemoryMan) met Ayisha (a.k.a. IE), a very talented performer who would later win the 2001 Salt Air Talent Competition and the 2005 Rapfest Golden Mic Competition. She and The MemoryMan completed their first album One-Five: "Straight Outta Salt Lake," in December 2004 and their next album will drop this April. As I spoke to MemoryMan, I was curious about some of his goals for his music. He replied "Our aim as a group is just to continue the upward momentum as a group, also for the Utah Hip Hop scene as a whole. That is why we started www.utahhiphop.com." He went on to say that he wanted to "... give people a chance to get their voices heard." One-Five will be performing their demo album, including their new song "Find Peace" at Liquid Joe's on Tuesday Night, February 7th. The show will feature respected DJ's: DJ Sam Eye Am and DJ Chase on the turntables, as well as the well known local rap act Krucial Keys. X"".§? : -:3;'^ |
