Show tiouf new/ A4 Vagina Monologues proceeds will go toward Donner/Galbraith Scholarship Michael Palmer Assistant News Editor On Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m., the UVSC Gender Studies club will be putting on a production of The Vagina Monologues at Center Stage. This will be the third consecutive year that UVSC has produced The Vagina Monologues. The play, written by Eve Ensler, is made up of a variety of monologues read by many different women. Ensler developed the monologues after conducting interviews with 200 women about their views on sex, relationships and violence against women. "I don't think there's anything better going on right now, as far as awareness for issues that women have to go through in modern society goes," said Joey Mayes, a junior English major and the recipient of the first Donner/ Galbraith scholarship award. Each year, the proceeds from The Vagina Monologues have been donated to a cause. Last year, the proceeds went toward the Promise for Women and Families Foundation. This year, the proceeds will be going toward the Blake Donner and Jen Galbraith Memorial Scholarship fund. Donner and Galbraith were UVSC students who tragically died in a Provo cave Your "Local" Insurance Office Student Discount • Motorcycle Insurance GEICO. Students with a lust to travel and the desire to experience the world are offered the chance to do it through school. "Where better to study French than in France. Where better to study anthropology and change than in China," says Grant Skabelund, Director of the International Studies Program here at UVSC. "There is only so much you can learn in a classroom." This year's programs include destinations to France, London, Ireland, Spain and China; places where students will be immersed in the culture they are planning to study. "It is a life changing experience," said Anna Kearl, the Administration Assistant for the International Studies office. "It is important that students get the most out of the experience," Kearl said, offering some advice on traveling the world. "Take charge of your experience," she also said. "Ask yourself 'what am I going to get out of the experience?'" Along with the chance to study abroad, students earn credits that would go towards their degree here at Utah Valley State. What the programs offer may vary from location to location, yet they all have commonalties in their service to provide Utah Valley State students a chance to be exposed to different cultures. "It is a great opportunity to go somewhere and study," says Skabelund. "You get to go to Florence and study D.a Vinci or Michelangelo." : The International Studies program has been around for approximately six years. Except for the "new kids on the block," (Skabelund, referring to himself and Kearl) the department has been developing. : The International Studids program has reshaped itself in the last year, according to Skabelund. The department is now self-funded and is now longer dependent on the school for grants and additional monies. These changes offer more opportunities for the students today and hope1fuliy will continue to do so in the future. "We can expand as fast as we want," Skabelund said. "[It] just depends on how many students want to go." Currently the International Studies department is accepting proposals for new destinations from both faculty and students. They have already been approached with proposals for Japan and Southeast Asia, and a possible Latin America addition. Any proposals for new program's must be submitted by April 3. For those students interested in going this year, the deadline is approaching fast and Skabelund predicts that four-out-of-the-five programs will be rilled. Italy has already filled its occupancy and had to turn away some students. For those interested in next year, Skabelund advised that they should start planning anjd saving for it now. Early registration begins in December.' For more information visit the International Studies office located at WB 100, or check out the website at www. uvsc.edu/international.
