"Get Shorty" sequel tries too hard to Be Cool Bi -Medic PLASMA DONATION CENTER Patrick Svensson Life Writer "Be Cool" suffers from a malady quite suited to its name: it tries so hard to be '"cool" that it forgets to be much good. In this sequel to the muchbetter "Get Shorty," both of which are riffs on Elmore Leonard novels, John Travolta reprises his role as Chili Palmer, an ex-shylock (that is, a collector for the mob) turned movie producer. In this film, he develops an in- terest in becoming a music producer; a career change that results in more dead bodies than even the mob can keep up with. The story, what little of it there is, is muddled and unnecessarily complicated. It's a disappointing follow-up to a film that is famous for the skill with which its complex plot unfolds. Chili discovers a young "American Idol" in Linda Moon, a talented (and of course, attractive) singer. As he attempts to make her a star, complications emerge involving disgruntled record executives, the Russian mafia, the feds, a hyperactive hit man, and a militant rap group called the "Dub MDs". Vince Vaughn and Dwayne Johnson (aka, The Rock) get the biggest laughs in the film. Vaughn plays Raji, a record promoter who dresses in a pimp outfit and thinks he's black. The Rock plays his gay bodyguard, Elliot. Don't worry, you read that right. The fanatical energy and glee with which these two play off each other is infectious fun. It's a misfortune that the movie they happen to be in isn't as entertaining as they arc. As Chili, Travolta effortlessly maintains his cool throughout, which is all well and good for him, but what about us? Are we, the audience, expecting to be entertained just because we like how "cool" these characters are? "Cool" isn't cool unless it builds on an interesting story and at least halfway plausible characters. Without them, it's just cold. Saving Lives + Relaxing = $2OO a Month 235-9800 349 E. Local band Allred, named after lead singer and guitarist John Allred, have answered that for us. It is an even duller, watereddown brand of music. These boys do have talent. However, a loud electric guitar riff would prevent the listener from falling asleep. Allred sounds like a mix between The Early November and Peter Breinholt, which doesn't mesh well. There just isn't any variation from song to song, they all sound very similar. Either every song is about one girl, or they wrote these songs to get girls. I think even girls would be bored with this album; I know girls like to rock sometimes too. There is just way too much depressing, I-need-a-hugfrom-my-mommy-because-Igot-dumped, stuff going on in this album. Elliott Smith was the master of writing depressing albums that were great. Maybe next time Allred should take notes from one of Smith's albums and use their talents to their fullest potential.
