Having been around since 1933, Scera has brought enjoyable entertainment to Utah Valley in several different forms. Not only does Scera put on plays in their playhouse, but during summer they also do outdoor shows. Currently showing at the Scera Shell Outdoor Theatre is My Fair Lady, which is being celebrated for its Golden Anniversary of its Broadway Debut. In August, Scera will be putting on Fiddler on the Roof. Instead of showing the plays each night, some evenings they show low-priced movies on their outdoor screen. If you're tired of sold-out screens and Ions lines for all of the new summer blockbusters, you can also try the Scera Theatre. They feature all of the newest releases (including Pirates of the Carribean and Superman Returns). Matinees of old movies are done weekday mornings for only $2. Even though we're adults, there's no hiding the fact that we still enjoy playing in water. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. This is a band is called June. They are young and imaginative and although they are not very well known, s have established quite a fan base here in Utah. I have seen this band twice in the last three months, due to the fact that they are trying to get themselves heard, and have been thoroughly impressed each time. The last time I saw this band was on June 3rd, when they played their first headlining show at the Avalon in Salt Lake, where they played to a full house and held nothing back to leave the crowd riveted and wanting more. In order to fully appreciate June, one must first ask themselves this question: "What do I expect from four 20 year olds trying to make it in the music business?" The answer to that question is energy, fun and of course the ability to play the instruments they hold. And I know what you are all thinking: "Hey Megan, what about the ability to sing?" Well let's be honest, now a days that doesn't seem to matter. However, June has that capability as well. The best song on the album would be the song "Patrick", which is a song that I personally love because it is fun to work out to. This is because it has for summer. Bring out the. kid inside with their water slides and diving tanks. During the days you'll have to get around by dodging little kids, but for us adults it's a little better in the evenings. If you're looking for something new and fun to do here in the valley, then take advantage of one of Orem's oldest forms of entertainment and check out Scera. This is a song about best friends going their separate ways. Sounds super cheesy, but it is amazing nonetheless. The bands that I would say June is most like would be bands like Brand New or Hawthorne Heights, but they do have their own sound that adds a level of originality that, to be honest, is refreshing. June is a band that one cannot fully appreciate until you see them live; for one they play without any shoes on, (which I love), and second because they put more energy into one set than any band on tour. If you don't believe me, then you will just have to see for yourself on July 22nd at this year's Vans Warp Tour at the Utah State Fair Park. I can promise that you won't be disappointed. One album to look forward to this month is The Formats new album DOG PROBLEMS, hits stores on July HTh. The Format will also be in concert on August 28th at the Venue, $15. This concert is definitely a must see. If you have information on local bands that you would like me to cover, let me know at megra34@hotmail.com. Until then, keep it real and support your local musicians. Just because a book is popular, it doesn't mean that it's going to make a great movie {see The Da Vinci Code.) Such is the case with The Devil Wears Prada. Anne Hathaway stars as Andy, a recent college grad that takes the closest job she can get to journalism as the secretary for the editor of the biggest fashion magazine. Having no sense of fashion, Andy is really out of place as she tries to work with her notorious witchy boss (Meryl Streep). Not realizing it, Andy begins putting her job in front of her friends, family and even boyfriend. With her personal life being destroyed, Andy must decide where her priorities lie. While the movie is delightful and witty, there is really nothing that drives it forward. It moves along at the same medium pace from beginning to end. The story is fairly simple, predictable and dry. You're not in for any real surprises. Though it's no big surprise, director David Frankel also directed several episodes of HBO's Sex and the City; therefore, Prada carries the same type of tone and feel. For all the ladies. The Devil Wears Prada is filled with a ton of good fashion to check out. For all the guys, you're going to want to call it The Devil Made a Hundred Minute Movie. |
