Ethics panel holds a discussion to decide UVSC's future From FINANCIAL AID- A1 by students, from signing up to monitoring their award progress. If students are looking for a checklist of all the things they need to get done before their application can be processed, look under the "How to Apply" link, which lists ail the steps needed to apply forfinancialaid. "If you do have questions, come in and talk with an advisor; that is what we are here for. Our department is now getting awarding done in real time," McCormick said. "Real Time" translates into three to five business days, and they are striving to get even better. As more and more students are getting the hang of the new UVLink system, they are checking their status three or four times a day. "We need to make sure the student's information is getting updated as fast we receive it," McCormick said. While services seem to be improving, there are still students who feel they are getting the short end of the stick. One student relayed her troubles with getting the school to accept her loans from a wellknown bank. "It's three weeks into school and I still don't have books; I am just getting run around in circles. Each party involved is saying the other is lagging behind, and there seems to be nothing I can do but wait." Another student said he registered on-line and a week later all his classes were dropped. There has been positive feedback as well as negative. One student said he really enjoyed the new UVLink system. "It has everything I need to find right there, although atfirstit took a little getting used to." So is this conflict a question of a lack of communication, or are some students caught in cracks while others move along? How long will the line at OneStop grow? Until it is fully staffed, or are students just not taking the time to navigate through the new features on the UVlink and adding to the length of the line for questions they could answer themselves on-line? From PANEL- A1 abilities may appear. She also decried the idea of regulating community values, and claimed that those terms have been "hijacked" by very specific groups. "The campus community is a community in itself, and it is this community that should be making future decisions about what happens,'* Julkunen said. Nielsen, who has made recent commotion with some of the pieces he has written in The College Times and The Daily Herald, spoke next. Nielsen described his position as a community member who has been involved for a long time with the school, and is now alarmed with its direction. He outlined the "deep concerns" he has with the school, the most troubling being the "alarming drift to the left" he thought he was witnessing at UVSC. "We need a school that keeps faith with the desires and the values of its constituents," Nielsen said. "There needs to be a sense of balance." Nielsen also suggested that UVSC needed to make serious policy changes with regard to this issue. "I am challenging the status quo of higher education, and this leftward drift of UVSC," Nielsen said. "We need to set a new standard in higher education; one with the ear marks of balance-left andright, academic breadth, and depth. If we could achieve this balance, we would be virtually unique, and the envy of other universities." Pedersen spoke next, describing his position as a Chad Clark/NetXNews Students and community members listen to the ethics panel, as they discuss the future of Utah Valley State academic and political policy moderate. He emphasized the student ability to take whatever class is desirable to that individual student. "The simple truth is that colleges here and all over the country will teach things that others aren't going to agree with," Pedersen said. "But it prepares us to deal with opinionated people. It teaches us a lot about positions and critical thinking. That's education." Michael Shaw talked about the Michael Moore situation last fall, saying the school handled it "reasonably well." He also emphasized the crucial importance that students be treated fairly, always. "I want my students to express their opinions; they need to, and they will never be penalized for that. That should never be tolerated," Shaw said. Paul Swenson was the final panelist, and he talked about the recent publicity that UVSC has garnered, locally and nationally. He also talked about the necessity of a liberal arts education, and After all of the panelists concluded, there was a question and answer period. Some of the exchanges during this period were moderately heated, but the atmosphere remained cordial overall. The majority of the questions were directed toward Nielsen regarding balance and student fairness. Former ambassador takes teaching position at UVSC From AMBASSADOR- A1 has affected his life, he had this to say, "This is a revolutionary moment for me in my life-from going from ambassador of my country to coming to the great state of Utah to teach." He reflected on the new change in his life, saying that it will give him the opportunity to interact with democracy in new ways. Dr. Abdrisaev is also excited about the experience of living in Utah, although he has already visited the state six times. In a lot of ways, Utah reminds him of home. "Both places are very geo- graphically similar, maybe our mountains are a little taller," he said with a smile. Dr. Abdrisaev knew and was in touch with Dr. Rusty Butler, who offered him the teaching position at UVSC. He was a former professor in his home country of Kyrgyzstan, teaching at a univer- sity in Bishnek, the capitol of Kyrgyzstan, before taking on the job as ambassador to the United States. Besides taking on a teaching position. Dr. Abdrisaev has just finished writing a book, and says at the moment his future is open.
