A Problem in Economics A fundamental problem of economics is to evaluate properly various services and commodities offered to the consuming public. This problem carries over into life, and meets every citizen fuce to face every day of liis life. We Bliould train more students in economics. Placing values on things is the lrasic consideration of every household, if it would Income a home, and not merely a place to eat and sleep. From our observations some jicoplc place a high value on whisky. Watch them come, both futher and mother, und sometimes accompanied by their children, and make their purchases at the Provo liquor store! Too often ragged and bedraggled, they yet rate the value of whisky, or wine, or some other hard liquor bo high that it takes precedence over food, or clothing, or decency. Many place a hjgli value on tobacco, and prefer to suck the end of a cigarette, spending more money for this ono commodity in a yeur than would buy $1000 life insurance policy, and protect the wife and family from future want and loss of home and They rate toliacco higher than their and friends, puff its foul smoke into their faces when they know tho habit is offensive to their nearest and dearest kin, and destroys the respect others have for them. In a word some rate tobacco and liquor so high that its value, is placed above home, and family, nnd friends, and future success. Some place a high value on entertainment, and sociul life. Dancing till duwn, to them, is more important than rest und preparation for their daily work, more important than success in their job, than the good will of their employers and the improvement of themselves to make the most for themselves by serving the liest interests of those for whom they work. Others plucc an unusually high value on pleasure in its various forms. They must ride wherever they go. A new automobile must be purchased yearly to keep up with the latest models. Tho economics of America is bringing a national problem in used cars. Manufacturers are finding that their own sales talks are reacting against them for they are being loaded up with used cars they cannot sell, which are taking all the profit from their dealers and preventing the sale of new cars. At the bottom of the problem is a question in economics, of placing a proper value upon things we use and enjoy in life. When we consider the fundamentals of society, we are led to praise the Federal Ilonsing Act and other measures designed to build and establish homes for the people. Homes and family life are the basic things in the prosperity of a nation. True it is that nations have forgotten in the cast these . fundamentals, but where are those nations todayf If America is to endure, if this people are to hold to the ideals of democracy, we must maintain true values true values of home, and things which contribute to the well being of the home food, clothing, shelter, education, wholesome recreation, and training to appreciate the finer things in life, as art, music, literature, all such things ought to be rated high in our public and private economy. A system of economcis which bolds to such evaluations will keep an even keel for any nation, despite all the winds of fate which blow.
