It Is the characteristic of a Liberal" to boycott an honest and fearless journal whenever it should happen to offend him. From the Provo Enquirer , H. II. Cluff, Pres., David John , Vice Pres., President A. O. Smoot , one chief owner. What Is the characteristic of you and your dependants in his line, gentlemen of the Enquirer ? Did either of you or your satellites ever boycott anhonest and fearless Journal whenever it happened to offend you? Perhaps this Liberal Characteristic of which you complain is merely a dose of your own medicine admin-lste- d by Providence to exact a Just retribution for wrongs perpetrated by a boycott and not always upon Gen- tiles either. Permit The Gazette to refresh your memory gentlemen. Do you member when The Gazette was first published about a year ago? Do you remember how your sheet began and continued down to the present time a series of lying attacks upon us without reason or excuse? You remember that your opera house management has boycotted us from the first. Do you forget when the committe of the late city council pretended to give us a chance to bid upon the city printing and euchered The Gazette out of a fairly won Job when we exposed the fact that Mr. Paxman, a member of that committe, was a director of yeur company and had aided in the unfair award of work to not only the highest bidder but to a concern in which he was directly interested and would be indirectly benefitted and which award was therefore contrary to law, you raised a great howl and Mr. Paxman forthwith ordered his ad of the Provo Lumber and Manufacturing Company of which President Smoot is chief owner out of The Ga- no decided prompt action to secure these required Improvements. The streets in many places are in a sad condition, and a dozen other neglected Improvements might be pointed out. Is the council going to meet these demands of progress; is it going to keep the city to the front by providing the public with the essentials to the growth and prosperity of the city? The time has come when our municipal officers must throw aside their little prejudices and foables, and labor for the public good honestly and errnestly . The present city council by neglecting to meet public demands for improvements are taking dollars and cents out of the pockets of every man who lives in or owns a house and lot in Provo. The Gazette will support the city council cordially aad loyally just as long as that body will show determination and capacity to respond to the demands of Provo City for improvements which are most imperatively required. The time is come when action should be indulged and words cut short; when every body concedes what is wanted let the shortest road to safely obtaining the desired improvements be taken. The people of this city will tolerate no more procrastination as a mere subterfuge for delay. Proyo is a city and she must be kept in line with Ogden and Salt Lake in the matter of public improvements at least. The people and their interests will tolerate nothing short of this. The Kaintuck Bugle (Idaho), says: The elk were so thick in Jacksons Hole this winter that the settlers had to guard their haystacks at night. They came in by thousands . The Paris Independent says: The force that left 8tar Talley on the 17th to break a road through to Montpelier to get food to keep the people from starving to death, which would have been the case in a short time had not food been obtained, arrived in MontThey were pelier last Monday. a received and warmly party given in honor of their arrival. The Pioche Record of the 29th ult. says: The residents of the heretofore quiet little village of Clover Valley where a large force of men are employed grading for the extention of the Utah Central were startled last Friday evening about 10 p. m. by a succession of pistol shots m the saloon owned by M. McNally. After the firing ceased several citizens repared to the saloon where the dead body of Louis Fox was found having been shot through the heart. The circumstances which led to the tragedy are as follows: It seems that the deceased with some others were in the habit of Bleeping in McNallys saloon. On the evening of the tragedy, it being time to close for the night, McNally requested those present who were not lodgers to retire. Chapman, who did the shooting, was rolling a cigarette at the time and responded that he would go as soon as he got a light. The deceased, who was somewhat under the influence of lipuor, remarked that if he was running the saloon he would go damn quick or words to that effect. Some angry words passed between the men, when the deceased (Fox) pulled a double action pistol and fired two shots at Chapman, when the latter pulled his gun and killed him. Chapman escaped unhurt, but McNally, the owner of the saloon, and a disin A 9IODKL I,l?TTI-:iK- . terested party, received one of Foxs Tlie Nltuatlon of Site llenl bullets in his shoulder.
