staff writer The dust from the student body elections has started to settle Student discord set a record in the number of voters with this type of an activity tending to be more of a popularity contest than a substantive issue race it is typical of a high school contest Because of this tradition at CEU a slumbering giant is about to awake That slumbering giant is the nontraditional portion of the student body This is typically the group of students over age 25 who are returning to school the ones with a quiet but vicious attitude who have life experience to back them up making them wily and hard to manage when their ire is aroused At CEU the student body is comprised anywhere from 35 to 45 percent nontraditional students but as a group they have been traditionally under represented in student government matters Nontraditional students pay the exact same student fees as traditional students but the system manifests its extreme inequity when it comes to how ASCEU spends the money nontraditional students contribute to the coffers In this area have no representation Specifically the area are concerned about how "their" money is being spent for activities During the recent JUICE club meeting where we got to question student government candidates on their platform (or lack of) a question was put to a prospective candidate about what activities would be planned to include Shortly into her description one of her party members jumped up and blurted that there was no reason why non-tracouldn’t come to any CEU activities In a literal sense this be let’s but true face some facts about this issue since might that particular candidate very clumsily and with great insensitivity blundered into the trap This is why that state non-tra- non-Ira- ds non-tra- ds ds ds ment is not true and why nontraditional students have not typically attended activities in great numbers and why they probably never will: 1 We are older so our social requirements are different we arc not in school for the “total college experience" 2 Our value system is different because of a more mature life experience we therefore tend to look at issues in a more critical way leading us to want different things in our stage of life than the traditional student 3 Most have relumed to school because of dire circumstances that have upset their live’s forever at a time when most people have an established life Again this is an experience issue on uncommon ground 4 The most which puts trads and which not was reason given the slightest consideration compelling when this candidate blurted with complete insensitivity that can come to any ASCEU activity is the fact that the larger have families and jobs which allows these percentage of only enough time to come to school a few hours a day for classes and that between family job and studies little lime is left for non-tra- ds non-tra- ds non-tra- non-tra- non-tra- ds ds ds “activities" Nontraditional ire will be easily aroused this year unless you our elected leaders start considering who we are and therefore consider how you spend our portion of the ASCEU how that activity budget It is time to start asking money should be spent and what “activities" interest them d wish list would include that the non-tra-d The portion of the ASCEU activity budget be spent for such things as supporting arts and cultural activities at CEU or possibly some kind of a daycare system for single parents or we want some of those funds to go to support programs that could be sponsored by Turning Point (note: new student government members if you do not know what Turning d Point is go and meet the counselors at this important meeting place and acquaint yourself it is important) want more fiscal responsibility in spending Basically d (heir share of funds Not a single penny of money should non-tra- ds non-tra- be spend on another dance (unless you want to organize a dance where you play our generation of music) or any Coffee Houses already lived through the bohe(especially since many the of House ’60s) or any specialized theme mian Coffee period weeks like MTV week since this is not our generation unless of course the nontraditional students agree to it These are great activities for the group they are aimed at that being the traditional don’t student It is fine to have these activities the fact as a them for matter of criticize student government offering it is essential that these activities are offered It’s just a question of who should pay for them It is simply a separation of budgets d for what we are interested in This activities and is the only way the “generation gap" can be spanned and a level playing field brought to the system To avoid raising the hackles of the nontraditional students my and gain a consensus as to our advice is you meet with desires and our share of the activity fees being spent (we will support coffee houses or dances if we have a consensus) Be careful in how you do it because the nontraditional opposition is poised like a cat ready to pounce if they feel there are improprieties in the system They will circulate petitions for recall and of elected student government officials and use other legal means to enforce their will when it comes to the money taken from our pockets New student government members listen to this important body of constituents Your political survival will count on bringing fully into CEU’s student body as participants really for the first time in the history of this college Otherwise we may as well split and have two student governments to manage the affairs of each group of students Unfortunately this is the reality faced it is hard but it is (rue non-tra- non-tra- staff writer woman in California has just Hearing that a given birth makes one stop and say “what?!" A woman old enough to have grandchildren that now has a newborn baby is not a common thought What are the consequences of a woman of this age having a baby? When her child is ready to get his or her driver's license she will be almost 80 years old She will be in her s when her child graduates from college Unfortunately she will not have the joy of watching her grandchildren grow up Or will her child take the place of those grandchildren? Will having a child at such a late age allow her to have both at the same lime? It seems that the reaction to a woman having a baby so late in life is that she is crazy Yet if a man were to father a child at that age it would not make headlines It is much more common for a man to have children at an older age than it is for a woman So why all the attention for an older woman to have a child? Perhaps because there are more health risks as a woman gets older people are concerned that she will not be capable of raising the child Even if there were no health risks is it still right for a person of an older age male or female to have a baby? Is it fair to the child to grow up with parents who are old enough to be his or her grandparents? The child may miss out on having someone who will be able to play and run around with them A child bom to an older person will also have a much shorter life with their parents than a child born to mid-80- younger parents Docs this mean they will not make good parents? There are many children who are raised by their grandparents because for one reason or another their parents are unable to do it ds trad-for-tr- ad non-tra- non-tra- ds non-tra- ds non-tra- non-tra- ds non-tra- Does age really matter? by Kelly Perottl ds What is the difference between an older person raising their own child and an older person raising their grandchild? Granted raising a grandchild is probably not something one secs in their future People who raise their grandchildren are not thought of as crazy — they are thought of as being wonderful for taking time to raise children when they have already gone through that part of their life So why is it wrong for people to choose to have children when they are older? The difference lies in that the people who have children late in life are making a choice to have that child People who are raising grandchildren have not made that choice Circumstances led them to be in the position of raising their grandchildren Those who choase to have a child at late ages have made a deliberate decision If the child is going to grow up with the risk of his or her parents not being able to do the same things as younger parents and that they parents have a chance of dying sooner than younger parents Is that fair to the child? Just because somebody wants to have a child docs that mean it is the right thing to do? When contemplating whether or not to have a child the main question should be (for parents of any age) “is this best for the child?” not “is this best for me?" g of the child is what is most important no The well-bein- Therefore the age The sometimes does not matter importance of age comes into consideration when it is the parents' decision to have the child When someone older decides to have a child it is a selfish decision because they will be depriving their child of the offerings of younger parents However this does not necessarily mean young people are better parents They too must not make the matter what the age of the parent that-ver- sea Ago page 3 Goodbye and thank you all very much i i by Matt Stannard j What follows is my own opinion An opinion is some-thin- g people generally have the right to express without fear of reprisal Especially the distuibing kind of “official" harassment which occurs slightly outside the proper channels Just in case though I ran a copy of this by the Attorney General and she said it was just fine (whew) This was my first real job 1 arrived in the Fall of 1994 and made less that year than I now make in an academic term I was told my job would be to "coach debate" but I participated in and learned so much more here Three debaters years 13 tournament wins three and three national titles later what is most important to me is that I was able to refine my teaching skills be an advocate for my students and meet some of the most interesting people I've ever known I want to thank some of them: Dean Gundlach most of all because he too is an advocate for the students as well as an outstanding forensics coach and one of those valuable and rare people whose words are as good as any legal guarantee Neil Warren is the reason we have the number one junior college debate team in the history of academic debate He is also my friend The rest of the an communication department consists of Susan Polster and a group of outstanding journalists much-malign- ed set Thank you page S |
