Show December 2 1993 Page 7 Lady Eagles sweep through tournaments by Gregg Prettyman Eagle Sports Editor Forget all of the low scoring high school girld basketball games you’ve sat through in your lifetime and say hello to the offense of the CEU women’s basketball team Tie CEU women are on a roll aid right now it doesn't look like ibcre's feiyone out there that will be able to stop them stow them down for awhile maybe but stop them During the past two weeks the Eagles have hosted one tournament and traveled to California to play in another as a result they have produced six straight wins and two tournament MVP's The tournament held here in the BDAC from November 0 featured three teams: Northland Pioneer Eastern Arizona and Western Wyoming The Lady Eagle’s opened up against Northland Pioneer on Thursday night and led by the strong play of Alisa Chamberlain and Jodi Hatch had an 18 point lead at the half It appeared as though CEU was headed for an easy victory but Melanie Joe of Northland Pioneer had other plans The Eagles could do nothing but sit and watch as Melanie Joe and the rest of the Pioneers poured in The lead disappeared quickly and in a matter of minutes the score was tied Melanie Joe would go on to make an amazing lOof 13 from the trey line! high-sewi- fast-pac- no-w- ng ed ay 18-2- three-pointe- rs Ross had 14 points and was the only other Eagle to reach double-digi- ts in scoring The following night the CEU women dominated Eastern Wyoming in every aspect of the game Everyone contributed as the Eagles rolled to a 77-3- 4 win They couldn't stop our size or our outside shooting and we took advantage of that and were able to beat them pretty good" commented Bianco This time it was Jennifer Heusevcldt and Tasha Bradley's night to put the ball in the hoop they led ail scorer’s with 12 points a piece Jenny Powell dropped in 11 pants along with a three for six effort from three-poi- nt land Bradley and Chamberlain dominated the boards all night pulling down 22 rebounds between them The tournament championship game was held on Saturday and pitted the Lady Eagles against the women of Western Wyoming After having shot over 40 percent during the first two gamethe Eagles came out flat in the first half making only 29 percent of their shots This percentage combined with the feisty defense of Wyoming found CEU with a six point and an uncharacteristically tow half-tim- e tow-shootin- g Bianco's of 29-2- 6 reaction’’wc couldn’t shoot the score ball to save our butts!" The Eagles had fallen behind and were still struggling midway into the second half until Angie Ross caught a pass some two-feline took behind the three-poione took at the basket and let go The a monstrous shot hit nothin' but nylon and gave the Eagles the lead and the momentum that carried them the rest of the game and onto a 73-6- 4 victory "When Angie Ross hit that big threeit opened everything up for us" remarked et The lead changed back and forth throughout the last ten minutes of the game The final seconds of the game found the Pioneer's Melanie Joe behind the three point line with her team down 83-8- 4 she put up the shot and it ended up being one of her only three misses for the night but her most cosily miss The Eagles grabbed the rebound and the win as the final seconds ticked off the clock “We went into the locker room pretty confident and then we came out in the second half and it was bombs away for Melanie Joe They were hitting everything they put up But we have a good enough basketball team that we could pull it out and ended up being a good game for us and we learned a lot from it” said assistant coach Ted Bianca Chamberlain led the team with 20 points Hatch
