Show College of Eastern Vol VIII Utah Price Utah—Friday March Science Fair Report The College of Eastern Utah sponsored its eleventh annual regional Science Fair March 8 on the campus Wilson Henderson professor of physics at CEU chairmanned the event He was assisted by a number of the faculty from the college According to Mr Henderson over 60 students participated in schools this event Twenty-fiv- e reUtah Eastern were throughout presented in the science fair The competition was divided into two main areas One area represented junior high school exhibition entries with the other representing the senior high presentations Four major academic fields were included in the comical physipetition cal earth entries in addition to student research reports In the biological area Carbon High School's Nyles Christensen took first dace with his project entitled “Seed Respiration" Second place honors went to Linda Allen and Debra Mecham from Union First dace winner from the junior high competition in the biological field was Arvin Winter-to- n Roosevelt Junior High Her involved project “Comparing Cavy Responses to Stimuli" Beverly Karrcn from Vernal took second place Several entries were tied for third place and included entries from Dana Rogers and Larry Dean from Grand County Roosevelt Shauna Rasmussen and Ronald Dalenc Vernal First place for the senior high physical entiy went to Orlando Rachele and Delbert Merkeley with their project entitled “Diode array-biolog- Coming Up Saturday March IS— Battle of the Bands at Armory March 17 March 20 18 19-Fi- nals 21— Spring Monday March Vacation 24 — Rrgistra-tio- Wednesday March 26 — n Movie “Torn Curtain" 8:66 pm Thursday March 27 — Weber State Assembly at CEU Piano concert at Geary Theatre 8 pm V jr 14 tK w 4 Number 1969 st — 11 'Of crv Switching" Second place winners were Doug Riding and Theron Schoefermeyer Third place went h Thomas Washburn All winners in this category were from Union T 0 High School In junior high competition from Roosevelt Robert De'lcr was first place winner with his presentation “Effect of Twisting on Wire" Second place was received by Michael Herrington from Vernal and third place went to Evan Baker also of Vernal n II :&£" In the junior high earth category was first place winner Rebecca Winder of Grand County n her entry “Earth Science" Kathy Pinkerton took over second and JocLynn Vancil Craig Porter Karma Jensen all Grand County and Notre Dame student I! w- - fv 'j'IjLee' Johnson ’ Geary “Desire Under the and Brent Gardner in a scene from Elms" Under The Elms “Desire fitWwSi : Under the Elms" a dramatic play written by Eugene O’Neil was presented by the Col- lege of Eastern Utah Dramatics Department Thursday and Friday evenings The story took place in the Cabot farm house during the 1850’s Ebcn Cabot the son was played by Brent Gardner Abbie Putnam Ephaim Cabot's new wife was played by Sue Geary And Ephraim Putnam the father was played by Lee Johnson “Desire Under the Elms” revolved around these three characters The story brought out their desires and feelings Ephraim was a hard rock No one got the best of him not even his sons Abbie at first was out to get what she thought she deserved in life even if it hurt others But soon shp found herself too deeply in love to take what she had finally won Ebcn was a young emotional man He tried to be a rock like his father but he also had a bit of his soft mother in him Other parts were Simon Cabot nnd played by James Bowen Peter Cabot played by Ricky Gilbert Th neighbors were Danny Dale Hard Lambeth Hayes Peterson nnd Carolyn Fostma Tlii! sheriff was played by Steve Paschall Winter Quarter At C E U The College of Eastern Utah will be ending its winter quarter the 19th of March Class work ends on the 14th of this month with final examinations taking place on the 17th 18th and 19th Registration for spring quarter is March 24 with classes beginning the 25th Students on Tuesday may begin paying their fees for the spring quarter Monday the 17th The CEU winter enrollment reached an all time high of 810 students an increase of 209 pep cent over the 1967 enrollment Fall quarter enrollment of this year reached a total of 779 This is the first time in the history of CEU that the winter quarter enrollment has reached a total figure above the fall quarter enrollment This is significant not only in relation to CEU but in relation to colleges in general The trend at most colleges and universities is for the year's enrollment to decrease as the year unfolds With an array of beautiful buildings added to Utah's newest junior college the school continues to experience an attractive student enrolment increase Present facilities will accom- (Coatlnued on Page Three) |
