Show Monday March 9 1959 A W S Sponsors Assembly Program Under the supervision of the AWS Council an assembly for the women students of Carbon College and High School was presented Friday at the regular assembly hour Leah Jessen president of the AMS council introduced the numbers of the program Participants included the 1958 Carbon County delegates to Utah Girl’s State a special guest Judy Winget the 1959 Utah Girl’s State Governor and the “Miss National Guard" entrants who presented their talent numbers Reba Keele Judy Brown Connie Vouros La Nor Fail Jone Littlejohn Carol Thayn Mary Swenson Marjorie Prettiger and Barbara Tomsic the 1958 representatives to Girl’s State held a panel discussion with Barbara Tomsic acting as chairman They spoke on various phases of the Girl’s State program such as friendship goverlunent talent alumni association and told of the different sessions of meetings Judy Winget a student of Highland High School in Salt Lake City was introduced as 1958 Girl’s Nation Delegate and as 1959 Girl’s State Governor Judy spoke on her experience at Girls' State and Girls’ Nation Mrs Verda Petersen advisor of the AWS Council directed the assembly THE CARBONICLE Thrao Legislators Make Trip Carbon Area Visited Members of the Utah House of Representatives and their families visited Carbon County Saturday and made a tour of the Castle Gate mine Part of the group made a brief stop at Carbon College The legislators were later entertained at a luncheon at the country club Hie “junket" was arranged by Representative Frank C Memmott of Castle Cate This was the first time the legislators have visited Carbon County in a group since 1939 when the body was present for the dedication of the then new Price Municipal building Former Carbonites Wed Miss Linda Workman daughter of Mr and Mrs Rex Workman and Art McKinnon son of Mr and Mrs Clinton McKinnon Price were married February 20 at the home of Mr and Mrs Clinton Oviatt in an evening ceremony foresnics tournament at Weber College Ogden Rose-- BYU Announces Plan For Scholarships The Brigham Young University has Just announced scholarships school available for the 1959-196-0 year Ten scholarships covering tuition and general fees renewable each quarter for four academic years on the basis of maintaining a 35 (A-- ) grade-poiaverage at BYU are granted to high school graduates who have achieved outstanding academic success and are of high moral character One hundred and twenty scholarships for $70 per quarter and 155 scholarships for $50 per quarter which are renewable for three quarters on the basis of maintaining a 30 (B) average at BYU arc offered to students of high scholastic achievement with additional consideration given to those of demonstrated leadership ability One hundred scholarships renewable for four years on maintaining a B average at BYU arc awarded to students majoring in the field of education who have achieved outstanding scholastic success forensics journalism music and drama and who have maintained a minimum of a 30 (B) average Forty scholarships for $70 per quarter renewable for three quarters if B average is maintained are offered to Junior college graduates One hundred and ninety financial grants-in-ai- d are awarded each year to students in extreme financial need who have a B average and who would be unable to attend college
