Show CEU Friday March 7 lttMMf “Superstitions no metier how ridiculous High school loam and drill debate tourney planned sen be overcome by logic 99 by Jamie E Hartzell staff writer Since the beginning of time man has done many strange things for the sake of luck Superstitions no matter how ridiculous they may seem can be overcome by logic In many cases they are a survival from those primitive religions in which men worshipped the wild elements in the hope that they might help him in his struggle for survival An example of this the touching or knocking on wood reflects early man's belief that every natural object such as a tree was inhabited by a particular God The importance of fire and iron still remains today with the carrying of a piece of coal or a replica of a horseshoe as a good luck charm This small example is one of thousands or even tens of thousands of superstitions You may laugh at these but who of us haven’t caught ourselves throwing salt over our left shoulder after knocking the salt or thought twice about continuing down a street after a black shaker cat crossed in front of you or even of going around a ladder to avoid going under it Not all superstitions have a history behind them that can be found but most have some good reasoning The spilling of salt meant misfortune because for centuries it was the only means of preserving meat in the winter The walking under a ladder can be traced further than the fear of a bucket of paint or a tool falling on you It was believed that anyone walking between the ladder and the wall was breaking the triangle-t- he early Christian symbol for the Trinity Superstition has also dominated women's work in the kitchen Some housewives believed a meal would be spoiled if it was stirred against the sun's course and in order not to offend the hens and to prevent them from not laying eggs no eggshells were thrown on the fire Even the table has supersitioussignificarce If a white cloth is left on the table during the night the household will be in need of a shroud for dead And above all 13 people should never be allowed to sit down to eat at the same table This superstition is generally associated with the Last Supper when 13 were present including Judas Iscariot Christ's betrayer Many of us who use tne expression "if looks could kill" are reviving tne once almost universal belief that the human eye had the power to injure or destroy an enemy Before the development of medical science disease and even death were often attributed to the evil eye Young children and animals were particularly vulnerable During the 16th and 17th centuries when witchea were said to destroy their victims by the power of the evil eye hundreds of women were executed because someone coincidentally died after receiving an angry look from them The judges were so afraid of being bewitched when sentencing them that it was not uncommon for the accused to be led into the courtroom backward There are also many superstitions connected with the stage and screen on their performances are hung on dressing room mirrors If they yellow quickly it is a sign of the show being a success But in contrast to this yellow is an First night telegrams and messages congratulating actors unlucky color to use as part of the set To many actors the phrasing of the first night message is very important The phrase "break a leg" is acceptable whereas "good luck" is considered bad luck Someone knitting near the stage or in the wings means the actors should beware and the spilling of a makeup box is most unlucky In my own family we have superstitions that have been followed for years Some of them don’t have any explanations behind them but like most people follow them to keep from taking any chances These include not starting a trip on Friday This is a popular belief in many families Another superstition having to do with traveling is that after having started on a trip if you remember leaving something behind or forgetting to do something you should continue your trip because turning back means bad luck is unavoidable Bad luck is usually an individual conception but it also travels in groups It has been believed that two people drying on the same towel or three people lighting up off the same match is bad luck And lastly ifa bird flies in your home a death is soon to follow and also if you place a pair of shoes on the table it means sickness will follow No matter what reasoning can be given for superstitions they have surpassed time and continue to be a part of almost everyone's lives The comedian Groucho Marx had his own individual interpretation of superstitions in his writing "The Truth According to Marx": When a person’s nose itches it's a sign that it should be scratched A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere Singing before breakfast is a forewarning of a fight with a neighbor--if the neighbor is trying to sleep late Throwing salt over the shoulder is likely to give the impression that the man who throws the salt has dandruff Finding a four leaf clover is a sign that you have been down on your hands and knees To get out of the bed on the wrong side probably means that you have had too much the night before To carry a rabbit's foot is a sign that you are a good shot with a gun-- or have a friend that is When three men get a light off one match it is indicative of the fact that they have only one match or are Scotsmen v Interest experience entl herd work sheped food service director By Mary Lucille Purcell
