Show Thursday Msy 13 1993 TteEagto-Pag- tl Criticizing the critics live I am surprised at the response to The Eagle comparatively speaking we are in my opinion very conservative in our views Anyone shocked by articles printed in our paper should take a look at the University of Utah's The Daily Utah Chronicle newspaper or furthermore "The Salt Lake Underground" Robert Trager and Donna L Dickerson authors of the "College Student Press Law" made the following statement concerning the free expression of students on college campuses "Freedom of expression and freedom of press are nowhere more important and worthy of defense than in colleges and universities Universities are seen as the training ground for democracy and "to impose any strait-jackupon the intellectual leaden in our colleges and universities would imperil the future educaof our nation" Sweezy 1957 This view of American tion has flourished in case after case and has become the starting line for extending constitutional guarantees to students on college campuses” It would be a sad day for student expression lo be hindered simply on the basis that what we had to say went against the status quo If we expect students to leave college as the future leaden and educators we must leant to question everything and try to correct the injustices of the world Tiro faculty and administration need to lode beyond the content on the articles and to the core of the problem If they would deal with the problems when they occur or when they are highlighted by the newspaper the change would be welcomed as a step in the right direction It et -- Victimization seems strange they are upset with us and not with the problems Many requests have been made to the faculty advisor of The Eagle Susan Pols ter to control and censor the content of certain articles before their printing This would be prior restraint and would violate our right to the freedom of press The guidelines for censorship come from the Dickey v Alabama State Board of Education 1965 This District Court ruling provided this statement "state school officials cannot infringe on their students' right to free and unrestricted expression where the exercise of such a right docs not materially and substantially interfere with requirements of appropriate discipline in the operation of the school" Dickey 1967 It is not Ms Bolster's responsibility to keep the newspaper's content in line with CEUs standards It would be nice if there was nothing to criticize on this campus but that is simply not true of CEU or of the world for that matter The National Council of College Publications Advisers sets up the following guideline for newspaper advisors: "The adviser must guide rather than censor Student journalists must be free to exercise their craft with no restraints beyond the limitations of ethical and legal responsibility in matters of libel obscenity and invasions of privacy" It was interesting that while I was writing this article I was asked the question "So who are you trying to alienate this week?" I am glad that the laws of this country allow me to speak up against the power holders and hope for a change for the better imm get it? Qying wolf is a bit too far and it is no honor to be a member of the victim club There are thousands of victims afraid to speak because victimization has become such a trend and people no longer listen or care I am asking you to find those people who "cry wolf and help them grow up Maturity is a long laborious process but a necessary process If we as a society continue to allow people to clog our courts with viccases that could be resolved with a bawl-ai- d and allow tims to victimize others then all of the changes I mentioned before are meaningless There are so many innocent victims that cannot bear the burden of their situation and many of us who continue to dump on their shoulders Isn't it time we lake responsibility for our problems instead of passing the buck? I offer this to all those who are afraid to speak " she won't recover from her losses She's not chosen this path but she watches who it crosses And we all sec her pain she wears like a banner on her chest And we all say it's sad and we think it's a shame And it is called to our attention but we do not call her name The girl with the weight of the world in her hands" Let's put some weight on our shoulders self-inflict- Date Rape (coot from page 2) ed (continued bom page 3) By the time students reach college they are loaded with cultural baggage drawn from movies televirion music videos and bodice ripper romance novels Over the years they have watched Rhett sweep Scarlett up the stairs in Cone with the Wind or Errol a protesting Flynn heroine who then melts in his arms or Stanley rape his sister-in-lawhile his wife is giving birth to his child in "A Streetcar Named Desire " Everyone should come to realize that date rape is a crime While the body is violated the qnrit is maimed How long will it take once the wounds have healed before it is possible to share a walk on the bach or a drive home from work with a friend or just a quiet evening alone without the bells of alarm ringing in the back as a reminder of the past derstanding It is not a communication problem It is not about a Opinion Editor MliMIIIIMIMMIIIINIHHHIHmiNHNMIlHNIN Gilbert Archuleta woman having regrets in the Troy Deluca Sports Editor Houck Assistant Sports Edttor morning for a decision made the PhotogiaphersJustlnJohnsonTravIsDayMciikSeeleyCralgOrookston night before It is not about a deCarmen Silva Graphic Designer cision at all Rape is rape and Illustrations HIINIlfMIMtMtMM IMIIIH HIHHflHIINMIl HIHIMI Michael Clayton L any form of forced sex - even beJamlsonlrownAnnaAdalr Reporters tween neighbors IryanGordonJennirerDuncanRandaflHanlngton MIckeOeMarslon classmates and casual friends - is a Chara L Pulsipher Elisha Ray Johnathan Bradford Jkscey Martinez crime Jack Otterstormjristy Atwood Ryan Peacock and Dkk Keyes Many believe that rape is only Advisor NIIIIIINIHtNNNINNMHIINNHIIMlINNIIMlINHIINIINIU Susan A Polster something women say because TteEaohbtoofflcMiludtnf pubfcafonoTtw CoSagt of Eaten Uahandbpitntodvvwy they like to tease and not pay the otharlhindayfalwMwandipfinociuartwi OpHoniwpiw dhtihpubSoallonmayof mwnafwflKtlhtofficUopinlonarCEUtaclminMialloafoculyiludwtfioritaR Jfmtag to consequences And in most cases effle b located In Room 134 of 9m Computer BuNnai BUUhe the victim herself may not be sure right away that she has been raped that she had said no and been forced into sex anyway Clair Walsh a Florida consultant on sexual assaults said "a date rapist will follow through no matter what the woman wants because his agenda is to get laid Brides Dmsss-VtB- s First comes dinner then a dance Accessories Ful Body Ifansquh then a drink and then the coercion GREAT CeltlesvsmsssBQs begins When that fails force is used Real men don't take no for 637-058PRICES! 1 an answer" over-poweri- ng w co-work- SftUwu&tte ffBbidal sell omnr RSDAY m HI FRIDAY Science C SATURDAY tuwsioA IbweCeicel ""MtJRUW 17 TOESdWnWEBFIESdW THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY ®1 CJLU Club NrtuNltMpM’e blown a hole in your ANNUAL 80S Ml STUDENTS AWAHOS 70S A tennis budget?
