Show c i'j The Papier That Dares To Take A Stand i t June 14, 1973 The UTAH Independent Page 5 READERS MARILYN MANION pear Editor: Just a comment on the news of recent weeks. It seems that everyone's attention has been turned to Watergate. I find that many readers and writers of the Utah Independent feel as I do that Watergate is really not the issue. I have felt for some weeks that it may be to cover up something else more insidi us, though it's open for debate. I've had several theories, but only history, perhaps, will tell how valid they are. They are First: the obvious, somebody did in actu- ality slip out the information. Second: Richard Nixon has served the , purpose of the conspiracy and they want him out. Third: Richard Nixon had a twinge of conscience and tried to go against the objectives of the conspiracy, so they are scandalizing him to get him out. Fourth: the time has come when the conspiracy thinks it is close to realizing it's objectives and a power struggle is beginning to take place between the various New Era Ahead? Watch Out! Even if you're a male chau.vinist and non-support- a of women's er lib, you've got to admit that the ladies have a few legitimate beefs. One of them is that they do not, on the average, get equal pay for equal work. But is that reason enough to support the Equal Rights Amendment? No, indeed, says a member of the Illinois House Representatives, of Mr. Henry J. Hyde. Speaking over the Manion Forum Radio Hyde warned American women that ERA would take away more rights than it would bestow. To wit: Everything that women want now such as equal pay for equal work, equal Program, . opportunity for promotion, equal access to colleges and these that sort ofa thing things are available under the law now. the law Having enforcing the law and are different matters, but they are enforceable. They are in the law now and I cannot conceive of one single benefit that women would Equal get if the so-call- ed Rights Amendment is adopted or is ratified. I can think of a lot of things they will lose, but there is nothing they will get that doesn't already accrue to them under existing laws. As far as equal pay for equal work is concerned, we the have a Federal statute Equal Pay Statute of 1963, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 Title 7 of that act. There are many laws that require equal pay for equal work. 4 The American Telephone and .Telegraph Company recently reached a settlement that will amount to 1 5 million dollars in back pay to women who were not being treated fairly. Some statistics indicate that about 45 million dollars has been awarded in back pay to women over a hundred in the thousand women last five or six years. What would happen to, women if the Equal Rights Amendment were ratified? Take Social Security. The benefits now accrue to women, if they are widowed, at 62. This, of course, will be a distinction that will be eliminated. In addition, insurance premiums are cheaper for women because of their and greater because their driving records indicate they are better longevity drivers. But this will have to be eliminated insofar as governmental regulation is concerned because.it will be an unfair distinction. What this means is that women will have to pay higher insurance premiums than they do now. In another area: Right now, almost every State in the Union provides, either through the common law or statutory law, that the husband has the primary right of support of the family. This will no longer exist and the women would be equally responsible with their husbands to support the family. 44This innocuous, care seem may but once day centers become available for all people on an equal basis, which is certainly one of the co-ai- factions militant womens organizations, then a woman really can be forced to put her children in a day care center and go out and earn half of the money to support a family. Many women are not trained to go to work. Many of them married as young girls; they raise two or three children and then if the husband decides to trade her in on a newer model, the poor woman is left to try and of cattle, at least 100 head of sheep, vast amounts of hay and support herself on the job market without any training and experience. perience or vision, and it would wjth their address Those wjsh. be nice if someone traveling to or jng more copies ca oMain 15 living in Texas could verify ,y sending us a dollar whether this' is indeed donation happening..
