The politician has learned in college to be a slick talker, and the honest voter, judging others by himself, is too often taken in and votes for this unprincipled prevaricator who keeps only his promises to the fat cats who have helped finance his election because of the axes they have to grind. Although the politician flaunts his college training at every opportunity, he hasnt been trained there to use his knowledge to do good. He has just learned more ways to flim flam and fool people. His college degrees are just badges of iniquity. I know all college trained candidates are not like that, but have lived long I enough and been fooled so many times that pessimism has overtaken me. However, while there is life there is hope and Congressman O.C. F isher, Democrat from . Character Texas, says education in public schools is catching on. With emphasis on basic foundations of truth, honesty, courage, tolerance and other character ingredients, an American Institute for Character Education has been launched in San Antonio, Texas. Two schools in hundred fifty-eigeight states and a total of 232,250 students are reaping the benefits. Other somewhat similar programs also exist. Founded by Russell C. Hill, author of Freedoms Code, many other schools are expressing interest in having character taught in ht different am glad is doing something up. kindergarten someone grades from I about this pressing need. No degrees should be issued for graduation to students who have not passed these character tests. If we could vote for graduates of such schools maybe we might then live under an honest government. I would like it if the term of presidential any successful or congressional candidate could not become permanent until he had served on trial for a probationary period. Salary increases should be in the form of bonuses at the close of a satisfactory term. (Satisfactory to the taxpayers, that is.) There is no substitute for honesty, dependability, and law and order. On Course JOE H. FERGUSON Candidate for United States Congress First District, Utah Government Big for very limited government. The Constitution of the United States was designed specifically to place limitations upon the kind and amount of power the federal government was to have over the states and the people. Article Ten of the Bill of Rights states this I am specifically: not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are The powers reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. Our Constitution and the individual freedom that it guarantees are being destroyed because our political leaders too often violate this restriction and we too seldom demand that they abide by it. When the principle of constitutional government is violated, government becomes excessive and huge bureaucracies are created. These bureaucracies not only result in huge tax burdens upon the people but tend to meddle in affairs which are private in nature and of no rightful concern to the government. Much of our tax money is spent not to solve our problems but to finance them. Agencies are too often created to aggrandize the establishment than to serve the people. Since the interests of the politicians often conflict with those of the people, the agencies pose more a threat than a service. We are forced to finance our problems the government forces upon us then must try to stop or nullify their detrimental effects upon us and our MARKS MESSAGE MARK E. When the federal government undertakes a function that rightfully is the responsibility of the states or the individual citizens, it severely impairs or destroys the states or individuals ability to make a decision in the matter. Also, when the individual is taxed to support a government-sponsore- d program, he is left without the sufficient funds to finance the decision of his choice. Seldom is the will of either the majority or the individual served in government programs because the bureaucrats administering the programs are not responsible to the people for their jobs. It is too difficult to correct wrongs in the programs and remove the wrongdoers. As a presidential candidate, Mr. Nixon stated how big government destroys individual freedom: If I were to pick one major issue in this 1968 election in which the candidates have a basic disagreement, it is with regard to the role of government. There are some who. believe the way to better society is for government to get bigger and bigger which means the rights and responsibilities of people will get smaller - and smaller. with this statement. But on the contrary, our congressman, Sherman Lloyd, has voted the opposite. He is fast becoming a Republican in name only. Today, as Republicans, we face a most serious responsibility. We must reverse this mad surge toward collectivism. If we do not, who is there to step forth and do the job? If elected as your Republican congressman, I pledge anti-proper- Candidate for United States Congress Second District, Utah The UTAH INDEPENDENT ty to Support a constitutional amendment already introduced by three congressmen to limit the spending of Congress to those things specifically authorized by the Constitution. This amendment will cut federal spending by 50 percent enough to do away with the personal income tax which provides only 43 percent of the federal income thus halting inflation and doubling our productive strength. Support the president in mining Haiphong Harbor, but in addition to work to extend that blockade to loans of our tax dollars to the enemy. Help repeal gun control laws and to oppose new efforts to infringe your right to keep and bear arms. Help reduce crime by limiting the appellate jurisdiction of the Supreme Court in areas wherein they favor criminals, subversives, and forced bussing. Help repeal wage and price controls, except controls on " government spending and the wages of elected officials. Why should a public servant make more than you who pay the salary? Help restore gold backing to the currency. Help revamp the UN Charter and oiganization to that of a limited form of government with a bill of rights guaranteeing individual rights and consisting of g nations. We can solve most problems better than government can and at less cost. Therefore, I shall work for less government and more individual freedom and responsibility. peace-lovin- |
