An amount substantially less than the $615 million paid in taxes. of the profit, $111 million, was paid About one-fift- h out in dividends and the balance was reinvested in the business. This reinvestment of the greater portion of the profits is used to maintain equipment and for the expansion of activities. At the rate of $66,000 of invested capital per employee, as mentioned above, the entire amount available for reinvestment as a result of 1974 operations would furnish jobs for about 6,800 persons. This is the way companies grow and the way they are able to employ more and more persons. It is also the way they are able to serve the people with the goods and services we all so urgently need. Dow is a good example of the great benefit accruing to the American people as the result of our large industrial corjjorations. We owe much to the people who are willing to economize and save in order to accumulate capital with which to finance jndustry. We owe as much, or more, to the few constructive people who have the talent, the energy, the devotion and the will to work long, hard hours, year after year, in order to make possible our great industrial complexes which have given us the highest standard of living in the world. Excessive taxation and regulation greatly reduces the amount available for company expansion, prevents the creation of more jobs, raises overhead costs and results in a smaller amount of goods and services available to the public. 'This, in turn, results in higher prices. The American people must learn the facts concerning industry, must learn to appreciate the service that is rendered and must contemplate the hard times that would ensue if we cripple these giants, who do so much for us, and are thereby forced to return to the handicraft stage of existence. 'That would mean a lowering of the standard of living to a fifth or less of what it is today. Vast numbers of people would have to starve to death because without our mass producing industries not enough could be produced to feed, clothe and house them. Corneralive Speaks Out A E. P. I did not criticize him. I merely asked him Are you one of the one hundred and eleven (111) sponsors of a resolution calling for an Atlantic Convention, the purpose of which is to merge the United States of America with a collection of European countries? Is it true that the objectives of this convention would be the surrender of United States' sovereignty, the issuance of a common currency with other member (European) countries, the pooling of energy and food resources? Is it true that this objective is provided for in the Charter of the United Nations, the object of which is to merge the Regional Governments of America and Europe with the communist empires of Russia and China? He replied, and categorically denied that it was the bill's intent to accomplish any of the above purposes and maintained that it would only be an exchange of ideas by all nations of the world. (I thought the U nited Nations was for that purpose. Congressman!) He also enclosed a copy of H.J. Res. 606 (House Joint Resolution) which calls for an ATLANTIC CONVENTION.
