Since the state medical examiner sees cases from the Salt Lake area only, it is safe to assume that in other areas of the state, there are at least four more children who die of child abuse. Most of these cases go undetected. There are three areas involved in child mistreatment, any of which could lead to the death of the child. The first is the neglected child, of which covers about the cases. These are the starved, unclothed, and generally ignored babies and children. The second area is covered under the broad heading of the Battered Child Syndrome.
