Show tho great necessity of fostering the mining interests of the country by good schools has long been felt hero in our territory wo stand greatly in need of a good mining school but few regions under the bright sun havo superior advantages for gaining information in regard to the precious metals than those existing in utah we have the natural features right by our doors so to speak and it ia really too bad that nothing has been done to utilize them for aduca 1 dional purposes which knowledge would of course tend to develops the mining interests of our rich mineral territory congress is looking to the establishment lish ment of mineral schools and last week a bill was introduced by the bouso committee on mines and mining which contains the following liberal provisions that cadi state and territory having within its limits public lands of shall shall receive annually for the maintain ance of any school of mines anat is now or may hereafter be established in auy such state or territory twenty avo per of all moneys paid to abo united stacee for lands provided that said sum so to be paid shall not exceed ten thousand dollars per annum nor it exceed abo amount expended by state or territory for the support of a school of mines within its limity fcc 2 eliat before any money bp paid to any State or Territory claiming the benefits of this act abe governor of such state or territory dball annually certify to the secretary of the interior that a school of mines is being maintained within la limits in which students ia attendance are eiven instruction in chemistry metallurgy mineralogy geology mining mining engineering mathematics mechanics and drawing t L student from other states and territories ri are into lucli school of mines on the same terms and conditions that students residing therein are received and lie shall also certify alic amount of money appropriated aud actually used by auch state or territory during abe preceding year in the support of its said school of mines SEC 3 that upon receiving the certificate required by the nest preceding section and being otherwise satisfied that the terms and provisions of this act have been fully complied vieb the secretary of the interior certify to abo secretary of the treasury alie amount of money derived dubiny alie proceeding year croaa tle sale of public lands within the limits of the or territory claiming alie benefits of act together with the amount which such state or territory is by virtue hereof entitled to receive and the secretary of alie treasury filially thereupon cause the amount so certified to be paid to the treasurer of said state or for alie and use of its school of mines |
