Show TUAT TEST how its tendency is viewed in nevada the supreme court of nevada has decided the anti mormon oath passed by the last legislature unconstitutional thesis just what was expected and we regret that the decision was not made sooner and yet there is yet ample time for those who had conscientious scruples against the oath to have their names placed on the register the anti mormon oath is one of the proposed amendments to the constitution ution to be voted on at the coming general election and we predict that it will be showed under so deep by the votes of the people of the state that it will never be resurrected the time has not come and we hoial never will come when a mans religious opinion shall be made a test of his rights as a citizen personally we have no preference for any christian denomination and a man certainly has as much right to belong to the mormon as lio lias to belong to the presbyterian the methodist the baptist or any other church so long as he adheres to the laws of the land no one should be permitted to vio late the law nor indulge in practices repugnant to the law although such acts might be authorized by the church of which he is a member but to prohibit a man from exercising the rights of an american citizen simply because be adheres to this or that religious denomination is repugnant to the principle of free government and contrary to section 4 article 1 of the constitution of the state of nevada which is as follows the free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship without discrimination or preference shall forever be allowed in this state and no person shall be rendered incompetent to be a witness on account of his opinions on matters of religious belief but the liberty and conscience hereby secured shall not be so construed as to excuse acts of licentiousness or justify practices inconsistent with the peace and safety of the state we have no sympathy with the mormon church we do not believe that society is benefited by its promulgation mul gation but we oppose an attempt to curtail the right of a citizen on general principles and would oppose an attempt at discrimination against any organization which styles itself a branch of the christian church the liberty of conscience must not be abridged in afree government elko independent |
