Show ACCIDENT A passenger and collide oa the C P THE SAD BELATED BYAN EYE WITNESS tho D E G takes some of the passengers through provo the pa R G passenger that went through provo at twenty minutes past I 1 three yesterday morning was two hours I 1 late in consequence of having to wait for fera from the 0 P who were in ane fearful wreck that occurred early monday morning in the sierra nevada mountains on the D R G were of the passengers who were right behind the freight anat was in the colli non and alio were witnesses of the dreadful affair the biad been apprised of alie catastrophe soon after it occurred but until yesterday lias been unable to get any of the particulars at first it was reported th at twenty five persons were killed including alie en jinever of both trains and the fireman of the passenger but later information contradicts the rumor mr hyrum giles was on the D R G passenger from ogden yesterday morning and biad a long conversation with a gentleman who was going east and who was present at the scene of the sad affair this gentleman stated that to his belief the engineer of the passenger was entirely responsible for the collision as he disobeyed orders given him that had they been observed would have pro vented such a dire calamity it was about three on monday morning when the overland tyer which left ogden on sunday ran into the freight from the west seven miles east of colfax there were two engines attached to the passenger train and it had been but a few minutes out from gold run when it ran at full speed into the regular overland freight train going east from colfax two heavy locomotives co were pulling the freight train and as the conductors and engineers had orders to meet no 2 at gold kun they were putting the train through at good speed to reach the station the two trains came together with a loud crash and then the four engines badly wrecked were thrown sideways across the truck and half into alie ditches on either side of the road strange to say only one man was killed alie unfortunate man was john walker the fireman on the front engine of the passenger train the other fireman and engineers were injured and in cases of one or two of them very seriously general superintendent pratt said it was caused by the fault of the conductor and engineer of the passenger train their instructions were to wait at gold hun for the regular freight train they bad not dont so for the reason that on reaching gold run they saw the freight train sidetracked and waiting for them this was 1 special freight train but the conductor of alie passenger paa train had mistaken it for the regular freight and went on to colfax believing the track was clear for him none of the passengers were injured beyond being badly shaken up and none of the cars were wrecked or thrown from the track ex capt the express and mail care the freight cars were not wrecked A passenger kajs without waiting to find out what damage I 1 had sustained I 1 made tracks out of the car with A crowd of panic stricken passengers and proceeded forward I 1 saw the two foremost engines smashed to pieces and tangled together in a seemingly inextricable tri cable arasa of steel iron and wood the other two locomotives were also damaged several freight cars were piled one on top of the other and their contents composed of a heterogeneous lot of articles were scattered botho four winds of heaven the baggage and express cars were also badly smashed acor walker the unfortunate young firemen of the passenger train was cut in two he was oiling up when the crash came and the chances are that h e never realized what had occur red Death must have been instantaneous the young man I 1 understand resided at rocklin where he has two brothers who are also employees on the road hoover and kelley the two engineers were badly injured by being buried in the debris of their engines and it was only through gods mercy that they were not killed hoover is su fiering from general concussion while kelley was scalded about the legs and arms A fireman was severely cut over the eye the injured men were all taken to sacramento and transferred to the railroad hospital |
