Show The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Ten Friday, June 7,1991 Letters could learn things from Pooh U. hostility should yield to new order of justice White-Blac- k Editor: In response to everyone who has written a letter claiming that blacks at the party of the three University of Utah football players, and blacks everyone, cry "foul" when something bad happens, "Wake up," you don't know a damn thing. It amazes me how individuals think because they have a black friend or have taken an ethnic studies class. You think you know how it is to be black. Do you know what it's like to be part of an ethnic group that, in America, is still fighting to be seen as equal to, or the same as, other Americans? Do you know what it's like to make up 1 percent of 25,000 students here at the U.? No! You don't understand, and never will understand what it is like to be black in Utah or in the United States. It is frustrating to go to a class or a movie and be the only black person in the room. It is frustrating to read a school newspaper of such good quality that prints the rebuttals of those who did not take the time to fully comprehend the situation and carefully write an educated response. I'm proud to be an African American. That means a person of African descent born in America. You don't know how it feels to see and hear almost everything associated with being black as negative and then wonder why black music, styles and dances are so popular. Being black, you wonder why so many white Americans, preferring to be "as dark as they can be," try to tan and not be white. This is something that I still to this day do not associated with black is negative. This letter is not to lash out in anger or hate, but it is against ignorance. It is for those who believe stereotypes of blacks and for those blacks who reinforce the negative stereotypes of other blacks. I have tried to make you understand why we, "whine" when something bad happens to a black person on this campus or anywhere in the United States. It is because, as an African American, you get tired of being treated or looked upon as different than any other American citizen. I'm a student athlete (and I emphasize student) here at this institution of higher education. I wrote this rebuttal, in defense of the 1 percent of black students on this campus as well as my fellow teammates on the football team, to ask and plead that we not all be judged by a few of us or by a few stereotypes when, in fact, not all white Americans are judged or seen by a few stereoptypes. In closing, there are faculty and students here on this campus who do not see color but see you as an individuals with hisher own distinct characteristics. Dr. King sums up the best way to deal with the problem of race in this quote. "When evil men plot, good men must plan. When evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and bind. When evil men shout ugly words of hatred, good men must commit themselves to the glories of love. When evil would seek to perpetuate an unjust status quo, good men' must seek to bring into being a real order of justice." Peace and let the hostility cease! Keith Embray Junior history understand when everything Before I leave this campus and say farewell, I ask a question. Can anybody see what is going on in the world? Would anybody have guessed ten years ago that be would Germany South Korea are considering reunification? is an outdated Don't concept. you think it is time that we here at the Hatred University of Utah get in touch with the concept that it is okay to understand and get along with each other? We all have our differences and opinions. Even the most rigorously centralized societies are starting to understand this. You don't have to be exactly like someone else to live with them. Is Utah doing its job to contribute to the global village? Hmmm... It is easy to make up excuses for why it's not. Just say the word abortion. Not to mention condom, religion and political correctness. Yep, that's right. I said condom in my article. This is live. It isn't Memorex. Amazingly enough the U.S. Constitution allows me to say such things. Inherently people are natural, simple and honest. Perversions in society and lifestyle are generally what remove these qualities from people. I'm hoping everyone agrees with me in saying that these are the most likable traits in our fellow man. Taoism centralizes around these principles of nature, simplicity and honesty. Taoists incorporate the ideal of having a still, calm, reflecting "mirror-mind.- " This ideal makes the Trade m old on card yoer a mew Mssae. You UNIVERSTY don't need to put any money down. You would think this would be pretty easy but days like today make me wonder. A day in the life of Pooh is much more simple, yet loaded with meaning. When Piglet asked Pooh why they were going on an expedition, Pooh responded, "We'll go because it's Thursday, and we'll go to wish everybody a Very Happy Thursday." According to Pooh and Taoists, you will never find something if you look for it. You must be patient and let it find you. I'm not looking for a solution to the present problem of society. I am only trying to do my part and hopefully it. will find me, and everyone else. Cynics consider Pooh to be a "dumpy little bear that wanders around asking silly questions, making up songs, and going through all kinds of adventures, without ever accumulating any of intellectual amount or losing sort simpleminded knowledge his of happiness."
