Show The Fire at tit fit Holyoke The main building of Mt College caught fire last Sunday afternoon afternoon afternoon after after- noon about five o'clock and was completely completely completely com com- destroyed by the flames The fire started in a wing of the main build building ng which was used as a From there it spread to the dor dor- The flames were fir first t noticed by men employed in the room boiler-room of the college but hut the alarm quickly spread amon among the girls in the the the- dorm dormi dormitories i- i tories dormi-tories who after a vain attempt pt to fight the fire with hand extinguishers went to their rooms to little of their belongings they couldn could An n alarm w was s sent to the Holyoke and Northampton fire departments but when the engines arrived they were of little use in fighting the fire owing to the great distance which the water h had d to to be pumped The only available water supply was from a small lake a third of ofa a mile away and many feet below the college buildings The heat of the bl blaze ze w was s very intense and in the evening the light from the burning buildings could be seen plainly from Amherst and surrounding towns No Noone Noone Noone one was seriously hurt in the fire The president of the College Mrs Mead and several of the students were overcome l by y excitement but not seriously seriously seriously ser ser- prostrated The girls have all been housed either in the residences of the town people or in Hotel Woodbridge Woodbridge Woodbridge Wood- Wood bridge and the exercises of the college have recommenced A meeting of the trustees of the college was held Monday and it was decided to rebuild but no date was was set for the work of reconstruction reconstruction tion to commence The insurance on on on the buildings amounted to which will not cover the loss much of which was on the unsecured furniture and effects of the students n A Amherst mIL erst Student u |
