Show UR article on the Preparatory Department Department De De- O OUR evoked somewhat unfavorable unfavorable unfavorable un un- favorable comment Some of our worthy professors thought that we were short of matter and had to write what we did didin didin didin in order to fill up our columns Some thought that we were visionary and impractical impractical impractical im im- practical and a moments moment's reflection would have convinced us that the University University University Uni Uni- could not exist without the preparatory preparatory preparatory pre pre- school Others thought that we were trying to create a sensation No we were not short of matter neither were we trying to create a sensa sensa- tion In the eyes of many we may have indulged in Utopian ideas Be that that that-as as asit it may we still hold the same views The stand which we have taken deserves more than passing notice and is not tobe to tobe tobe be sneered at by anyone It is said that were the preparatory school abolished abolished abolished abol abol- there would not be more than sixty or seventy students in attendance at the University That is about the number of college students here now and the number will not increase very much until the University has shaken off its high school character There is something repulsive in having the young men and women who pursue regular courses or do advanced work as specials mix without any distinction whatever being made with those students who are fitting themselves for the college proper As long as this condi condition tion of affairs remains our college will be mainly used as a fitting school for Eastern universities With the preparatory school abolished there is no need of Utah boys hoys going East to finish th their ir education Ours is a strong Faculty We have many professors of whom any university might well feel proud and it itis itis itis is in the power of the President to make strong and weak points in the Faculty It is our candid opinion that something something something some some- thing must be done Stanford University is situated not many miles from here It costs hut but to go from Salt Lake to Palo Alto Stanford has a good situation an able President a splendid Facu Faculty ty good buildings almost no end of money back of it and the tuition is absolutely free In the face of this how can anyone oppose the abolishment of the preparatory school How can anyone anyone anyone any any- one think that Utah with a large and ever increasing population has not enough sons and daughters to support a first-class first university |
